    New GPU Reccomendations!

Hey there every one who is computer savvy. I believe my current graphics card has let me down, finally. It was an Nvidia 8800 Ultra that I got from a buddy a few years ago. I am looking at new ones such as the GTX660 or GTX670 but I am curious as to what others have or recommend.

My current specs are an AMD phenom II hexcore @ 3.2ghz and 8 gigs of RAM.
    910 watt PS

Lemme see what ya guys think!

    Thanks in advance!

GTX 670 would be fantastic. 7970 is around the same price and you could look into that, though.

If you are considering a Radeon HD 7970, I'd suggest you get a 7950 for about half the cost and just overclock it. It runs cool and stable with the same performance as a 7970.

If you had a 8800 Ultra previously, pretty much anything over $100 is gonna be quite a huge step up over the performance you were previously getting.

The Radeon 7950/7970 are great cards at between $150 to $250 price range and will easily be 4 times faster than your previous card.

If you want to stick with Nvidia, the GTX 660 and GTX 670 are the direct contenders in that price range and performance level.

I have the GTX670 based card, it is not bad. Worth a look if you're looking at gaming with it.

If you don't have one already, also look into IPS panel monitors to match with the video card. The color will look a lot nicer, in fact, you'll be surprised how nice even some older games look when you changed to a IPS panel monitor.

I say go with a gtx660ti best bang for your buck if you do some gaming imo. If not a gtx 650ti to save some money.

7970 user here, love it. Easy to overclock, flashing bios was fun.

That being said, any of the current gen cards will do you good. 7970/670/7950. Just do some reading to see which company voltage lock their boards and stay away from them, because you wont' be able to overclock the card if it's locked.

AMD 79xx series cards overclock well, just make sure you get an non-reference cooler. I had a 7950 with a stock cooler and the thing was loud when the card heated up. I switched out to a 670 and prefer it over the 7950. AMD drivers have made some good progress recently but IMO NV drivers are better. If you're looking for best bang/buck it's probably an OC'd 7950, or a 660ti. If you can pick up a used 670 that could be a good deal too.

my laptop has a gt425m 1gb... the only problem is that I need a huge fan underneath if I'm doing anything heavy duty or it overheats.

It helps to know you min/max budget and what purpose the card will serve but for the most part I'd agree with whats been said here. The only difference is I'd probably evaluate your needs and determine if you really need a 6 series card (Or AMD equivalent) or if you can make a higher end 5 series card more beneficial to your circumstances, and probably for still less money. Just something to think about

Going from an 8800 to anything in that caliber is going to be a monumental change.. but I also can't help but think that if you've been using an 8800 all this time.. you probably don't need to spend top dollar on a new to market card. If you'd like to save some money, I'm betting a used 560ti for around 100 bucks would probably suit your needs. Even and old stock NIB 560 can be had for a 150 all day long. If you'd rather get something newer though, I'd follow the above advice.
