Dude, you need to go out and buy an upgraded OS. I would bet you are running leopard. You will need to upgrade to Snow Leopard.... I would then recommend just jumping into Mountain Lion. Its a super easy process. You can then update iTunes and your iPhone will work.

PM me your address (If you need it... I will send you a copy of both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion).

......I just scrolled down and it looks like you may have it working? Anyway, let me know if you want the copies (I'll flat rate them to you).

Nope in fact it's fixed already. Reformatted HD and did a clean install of the update. Back up to speed. I should have done this in the first place rather than installing over a previous OS

Have you tried updating itunes? likely, it's not the OS, it's iTunes that needs upgrading (although a bump to 10.6.x wouldn't hurt).

1: Jailbreak the old cellphone and rollback the changes to an mature iOS and then get all your offerings off of it that way.

2: go to an the apple company shop and pay a "genius" to do exactly what phase #1 did, only if they F it up, you might get a coupon or something instead of an even more intense frustration ( not acquainted with your technical stage ) . . . . . . . .
