    Merging Partitions

So I am currently in the process of merging two partitions: 21 GB and 455 GB. I am using Acronis Disk Director v 11 and after roughly 18 hours it is only at 3%.

Is this normal or is my system committing a slow arduous suicide?

Yes, sounds a bit slow. Several hours for the complete operation sounds reasonable. 18 hours sounds a bit long...

        I am running windows 7 32 bit.

I let it continue all day today and the progress indicator did not budge. It still sits at 3%.

If I decide to just pull the plug, am i looking at complete data loss or is there a chance of recovering from this? I have some files that were not backed up recently.

        Thanks!

Looks like you are not alone. http://forum.acronis.com/forum/21005

Its recommended to make a backup image of a hard drive before doing any operation like this.

When you do reboot you may be fine or it may not see your disk at all. Disk Directory has a function to find lost data so you might be able to rebuild your partitions using that.

I would look for a good FAT recovery program/utility to run in the event that this happens and then just pull the plug. The good news is that your data SHOULD not be harmed but that fat table might be corrupted OR it might be possible that the fat table is untouched because if I recall correctly, Acronis is all about doing things but not actually writing/saving the changes to disk until the last few moments of the operation. Good luck.

A little more explanation from you on a few thigns though please, why are you doing this? Please do not say that you are trying to make this entire drive your C:

If you escape and dodge the bullet let me recco that you maybe merge a little bit at a time, like maybe, merge about 50GB instead, then if THAT is all okay, maybe defrag and try the rest of the drive again OR try it again with 100GB next time. Many times in the PC life I have found that even though something SAYS it can handle big things, it really can't and that means that you need to go at it in smaller sizes. It might also help to get ALL nonessential items off of the drive with the data so there is less data to play with when you merge. What does a 32GB class 10 SDHC card cost at target? about $35-$45 so then maybe get a 16GB card at $29 (Lexar or San Disk class 10) and move data to it and then move it back when you are all done. ?

You should be able to merge adjacent partitions using the windows disk manager in 7.

You shouldn't need 3rd party tools.

If your drive has a lot of data, I'd imagine that could slow things considerably.
