The "Geek Squad" declared them all "defective."

I finally chose a Windows 7 laptop instead. Windows 8 is designed to cater to the troglodytes who cannot type or spell or use a keyboard or a mouse. It is designed for touchscreen PCs.
I had the same problem when I bought a new DELL laptop when Windows 7 first came out... no matter what. I REFUSE TO BUY A MAC!

      Possible.

I upgraded two laptops with no problems since day one of Win8. They are working great as of today.

You know why Macs are so great? Cause they use one set of known hardware. You know why PCs are so iffy? Because anyone worth their dongle can get Windows to run on any PC hardware. So if you really think about it, Macs aren't really that great anymore.

But I digress. It's not going to be "another" nightmare. It's only a nightmare to those who refuse to change. Those types will always be the lagging end of any type of change, not just in the OS world.

So I re-downloaded WIN8 and this time I used my USB drive... installed like a charm.
Interestingly enough, the legacy drivers for my ATI graphics card didn't work so I was initially at the screen resolution of a calculator. I removed the old GPU and was back to normal.

Now only if I knew how to navigate the new friggen OS

If you change to Windows 7 Professional, you will be a happy, happy man.

Windows 7 is like XP on steroids. Everything is baxkwqrds compatible, and it just works fantastic. It's even faster, too. I used to hate anything new. Now I can't live without 7. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

Already happy, you mean happier. I have W7 on laptops, it works fine. XP works fine too. I may be too dyed in the wool to recognize the advantages of W7, or give a darn thereafter. For that matter Vista works ok on another laptop as well, except for always asking me if I really want to do what I just said to do. I hear that is an admin thing..........no biggee.

xp has its shortcomings so I made the move to 7 64bit quite a while back. it took me a little bit to figure out but after a month or two I didnt miss xp at all.

at $90 Windows 8 is cheap but I really dont know what its all about. At first glance it look like the integrated social networking crap into it. The few pics I have seen show a home screen that reminds me of a cell phone. I figure I will see a demo in a store while Im out and about shopping. I will be sure to monkey around with it then before I reach a verdict on it.

I had a buddy attempt to install it three times before he finally got it to work. I tried the beta and I wasn't impresses with Windows 8 on a mouse driven device but I got to try it on a touchscreen and it was A LOT better. Since my HTPC is hooked up to my tv, I will be sticking with windows 7........the old fogies can stick with XP

Clean install should have zero issue, just ensure you delete all current partitions as some vendors kept encrypted recovery partition that could cause problems.

So boot from cd, remove all partitions on the drive and let Windows 8 create its own. This should work just fine.
