Yes, to convert vehicle specific xp to universally used xp, it takes gold, which can be purchased for real $. Sadly, I've spent about $60 on this 'free' game.

Barraks can hold your tankers for later use. EG: you maxed out your tier 6 tank and are ready to purchase a tier 7 tank. Say the crew from the tier 6 tank is trained to 90%. Instead of buying your new tier 7 tank with a 50% trained crew, you can send the crew from the tier 6 tank to the barraks, then train them for the new tank. Their skill level will not be 90%, but it will be higher than the default 50%.

That's it......I don't even want to look at what I have paid.

You always want to keep the same crew from tank to tank. The tier 1 tanks start with 2 crewmen, they do all the jobs, radiomen, driver, gunner. loader, commander. When you get better tanks you add crew, gunner, loader, radiomen, etc. Lets say your loader dies, this will casue your load times to slow down but if your commander also has experience as a loader the effects are reduced. Plus each crewmen can research a skill so keeping them going from one tank to the next means they get more skills faster

'QuarterBore' (of course). I started playing Tier 1 Russian light last night (MS-1); I've only been playing for a couple days, but I've always liked the Russian tanks.
                • I've researched and bought/mounted the basics, but I'm unclear as to how to better my crew. How does that work?
                • Do I actually need to spend real $ to do so?
                • Is putting real money into the game worth it at this stage or should I just concentrate on learning the game and the mechanics before trying to upgrade.

You can spend ingame earned $ to train up to 75% ($20k ). I have only trained gunners up to this level. Pays off if you use TDs, get a keyhole position and snipe.

You don't need real money for anything. You can grind all the way from tier I to tier X without spending a cent of real currency. You can pimp out your tanks with the best gear (except gold ammo/consumables) without using real money. You can train your crew all the way up to 100% and get all the perks, by just playing the tank; no real money needed.

That said, using real money will help greatly. I bought a VIII premium tank ($30-$40ish). A win on a good game = $40k-70k silver net. Would be even more if I had premium. That would take me 5-10 wins in a tier V. So you do end up paying anyways... just... in time rather than money.

I should have bought my Lowe right when I started playing tanks (June). I probably would have saved myself days worth of playing time. But I was cheap, thought I could do it all free. Made it all the way up to tier VIII free and then just gave in. It was taking too much time to progress.

Also, since the premium tanks are already 'elite' and there's no skill penalty for transferring crew into them, they make excellent crew trainers. All the experience made on a premium tank, you can divert towards your crew by clicking "advance crew training". Additionally, since you make so much more xp in high tier matches, your crew trains extra fast.

There is really no reason to creat a clan until you want to do the clan wars. And you don't want to do that until you have a ton of people with maxed out tanks. Ie, the clan I was in for a while I never once got to be in a clan battle as there was always someone with a T9/10 that was a much better choice than my T7/8.

Someone should just create a calguns chat channel with a PW and then post it up here and everyone use that to put together platoons. (BTW, 3 tank platoons and using teamspeak or something is a decent advantage so you can play as a team.) If someone has a TS server they can let calguns people use thats handy too.

^I like this idea. A platoon team would be cool. I just need to play some more and get the basics down, game mechanics, etc. And learn some of the maps better. CALGUNS emblems on turrets would be awesome.
