Full format/restore didn't help. It spins the disc up for about 30 seconds, the icon in the upper right corner spins, but it eventually stops and we never get an avatar for whatever disc is in (audio/dvd/blu ray/etc).

Havent had that problem, but this forum has some possible solutions, in posts 17 and 21 as far as I can tell (post 21 looks easy enough to try).

I would also make sure he has the latest firmware update, as some folks were pointing to a bad version as a possible culprit, but I always update mine when it's available and have never had this problem.

      Good luck.
      This is my sig line.

did you get the right model laser?

Yeah, both were 450 laser assy's. Not sure which way to go with this now.

I really doubt its a firmware or hard drive issue. I still think its a laser problem.

I would first check to see if anything is blocking it from freely spinning
check that all ribbons and cables are connected correctly

I would send the laser back and get a replacement
