    question about a PS3

    Hey guys,

a buddy at work has a PS3 that is acting funny. I dont have one, but I am sure many of you do....lol.

Anyway, he says it boots up ok, can access the internet fine, etc. the XMB works fine (dont know what that is).

Well, he says that if he puts in a game, the icon to select the game never appears. Same if he puts in a blu ray....no icon to select it ever appears.

He says the little icon in the upper left corner spins for a sec and the little light by the eject button comes on, acknowleding a disk is in, but that is it.

    Any ideas?

His Blu Ray reader is dead, happen to my PS3. No Big deal really. See if you can find local shops who will fix it for you. If you send it into sony it will cost 99 bucks and they will wipe clean your memory, and it take weeks to get back. I found a shop here in So cal who charged 119 to put in a new one. My saves were fine, and it took like 30 mins.

Tell him to play a regular non blu ray DVD, if it works, it confirms it is the blu ray

I called him. He says that no matter what disk he puts in, he never gets an option to run it. He can hear the motor in the drive try at first, but then nothing.

Cd drive died. Happened to mine, tell him to call and file a warranty claim if its still less than a year old, they'll even cover shipping back and forth.

Its more than a year old. I figured it was something like that. Can you buy the drives and swap them yourself? I cant see it being much more than a couple of screws and a couple of cables.

I use my PS3 every day, if it crapped out I'd buy a new one right away. I'm not bright enough to fix it and too lazy to look for a repair shop.

Yeah, I researched it last night. Easy.....ordered the part too.

I kind of like his, I might have to get one of my own.

                          Call playstations customer service support.
Chances are the hard drive just needs to be rebooted. It's just like with any computer sometimes the drivers need to be reinstalled for certain program to work. I would call them before taking it to any local shop. And besides If there is a repair that has to be done at least it'll now come with a PlayStation backed warranty.

I have a spare drive from my 1st gen PS3 if needed.

Got the YSOD so I can't use it, but the HDD and Blu-Ray drive are still good.

well, we got the part in, got it swapped out, and put in a blu ray disc. It is doing more now, but still not reading it. I am currently restoring the PS3 with a full format, so we will see from there. If it works, cool, if not, I am lost.
