Hughes Net

Has anybody used Hughes Net. We are moving to a small town and are considering using it and Vonage for phone and Internet? Can't find anyone who has it? Just wondering if it is really a viable solution????

It sucks plain and simple. Any satellite provider is going to charge you am arm and a leg for horrible Internet services. They are super slow even on the highest plan. I now have wild blue I pay $90 a mo. But the kicker is you can only download 17gb in a rolling 30 day period. As for Hugh's net you can only download I think 350 mb a day and then they cut you off. It's a tough decision to know you have to commit to these people for 2 years. All in all I hate it in my opinion

The best solution to rural internet is wireless, usually by forming either a community service or by getting one of the commercial Wide Area Wireless providers to provide service.

Community ISP is usually done by taking the person who is in range and making them the ISP start point and then you either relay or broadcast out to the remaining members. We have bounced community run wireless for miles down canyons using repeater stations and the like. So Sat should be a last resort of all last resorts to turn to.

Don't do Sat, ever. Terrible internet, terrible pricing, terrible service. If you wan an OTA High Speed use a 3G or 4G home WAP solution, about the same cost 10x better service.

Our area tried that wireless and the guy took everyone's money hooked up their wireless antennas and never finished the repeaters before going out of business. As far as AT&T 3G wireless where I live we are above all AT&T towers so we don't get good cell service

as everyone else has mentioned, satellite internet sucks. You'll have about a two second delay on everything you do, that means that you won't be able to online gaming or VoIP calling. Its like when you see a satellite hookup on TV and the guy on the other side of the call has a two second delay before he replies to you.

Hughes is launching a new Satellite in October and have come out with some new fast data plans that you can watch streaming content as well as movies.

Hughes customer service sucks, so even if they offer an improved product, you will still have many problems. My wife was on with their executive customer care at least once a week.

I had to have it installed at a remote customer site. It is EXPEN$IVE, slow, and the service stinks.

that still won't help with the 2-seconds of lag that the OP would have with Vonage calls.

I've set up several multi-mile and over hill Wi-Fi repeater setups. Not owned by me, I was just paid to do the job. And they worked. ISP was operated by the guy who owned the end-point. It isn't something I would base a business solely off of.

In Salinas a guy serviced his entire sub-division as ISP, it wasn't exactly profitable but more of a side business.

No one has a responsibility to provide Internet, but if you folks want it, make it happen.

The thing that blows is my neighbor to the right has local high speed Internet but is not friendly. And of course my house is the last in the att line and they cannot cross over into other providers area. I even offered 10k to bring it to my house and was denied.

As mentioned above, do not do it. I have hughes net now. Its the worst Internet service for the most money. I barely get better that dial up speeds and pay 90 dollars a month. By far one of the worst decisions I have ever made was signing that two year contract. I'm out in the sticks, so it was this or dial up.

I checked out the Hughes net upgrade, much better speeds, but for 150 dollars a month! And another two year contract. I just can't afford that. That is for speeds someone would pay 40 dollars a month for in urban areas.

i was a Hugesnet installer and all i can say is i would never pay for the crappy service ....

and you guys think talking to customer service is bad try haveing to call the NOC and change sat due to line of site issues ....

I just finished turning my HughesNet satellite dish into a solar cooker yesterday afternoon.

Kind of like this one.



Gonna try it out this afternoon when I get off work. Hopefully I will have enough sun left in the day to test boil a pot of water.

Just another step in preparing for the Zombie Apocolypse.

At least I will get some use out of the equipment I had to purchase to get lousy internet.

Shut it off after I got an iPhone with a cellular data plan and my wife got an iPad. Whole lot cheaper, and we can do everything we used to do on the computer.

Do you have LOS to a friendly neighbor? As for AT&T, they really don't want to service more people because you might pay for the line extension but if it is in the polls they have to get permits, do environmental impact analysis. Tons of BS. Not worth it.

Sorry you are in a tough position but do anything BUT get in bed with Huges.
