    IPad2 transfer files and video

    Apple guys,

Maybe you can help me decipher this as I'm not an Apple power user. My mom wants an iPad2 strictly to view photos and video, light browser and email.

How do I get files captured from my Panasonic DSLR to the iPad2? Do you have to use that crap iTunes? I can easily do this with my ASUS Transformer by plugging it into my computer and drag n drop. Someone told me that doing this via the iPad is a royal PITA.

Download an app called airtransfer. It allows you to transfer any common file from your computer to the ipad over wifi without apple itunes shenanigans. I couldnt get my ripped dvds on my ipad for a trip used this app and was good to go. I have nothing to do with this app i am just impressed with it.

You also can buy a dongle that attaches to the 32-pin connector that is an SD card reader or a USB port. (Two pieces in kit) You can either connect the camera with a USB cable or remove the flash card and read it directly. $39

Tell her to get an Android tablet, and not to worry about proprietary cables, installing special software (iTunes), nor as much conversion to proprietary formats...

Thx for the input so far, fellas. I havent used many Apple products so this helps fill in some holes. With the dongle, is it as simple as taking out my SD card, plugging it in and the iPad handles the rest (i.e. importing and cataloging)? What about the video files taken from my DSLR? They aren't in QuickTime MOV format so I imagine they'd have to be converted?

+1 vote for the dongle suggestion. It should initiate a simple interface dialog to accomplish what she wants.

Try dropbox. Alot easier than having to deal with memory cards and extra hardware. Plus its simple to use and can empower your mom to transfer files herself and not be reliant upon you everytime she wants to make the trasfner.

Great info. So an ipad2 16gb would have enough horsepower and storage for what I need to do?

You can get a generic version of the dongle off of Amazon for under $5. It works great. Plug in the dongle, insert SD card and watch the pictures pop up.

Ok, $5 was the old price. How about $2.39 shipping included.

                            DropBox.

Transfer the files to your DropBox folder through your computer, then access the files on the iPad with the DropBox app.

Oh, and don't be slamming iTunes, buddy.

using iTunes has easily been on of my most miserable end user experiences ever.

The #1 worse user experience ever has to be "Six Updater" for use with ARMA2 / Day Z. Most useful yet impossibly unintuitive interface ever.

My complaints with iTunes beyond the proprietary nature, is the overwhelming attempt guess what / how I want to interact with it. I prefer neutral interfaces that react instead of proactively attempt to solve problems I didn't have until their interface prompts created them.
