    enermax 85+ power supply bad?

My main PC will post and boot fine then run for 5-10 minutes then without warning it just shuts off as if the power supply was unplugged. No BSOD, no temp warnings nothing just boom, off. Is there anything else besides a bad PS that could cause this symptom?

Maybe a bad motherboard, but the PSU is the first thing I'd swap to troubleshoot it.

      no temp warnings
Meaning you have an accurate monitor of temp?

Is the power supply's fan working? Have you tried monitoring the MB's temp?

This. If the fan stops functioning the PSU will overheat and shutoff. If the CPUs heatsink/fan are clogged/not working the CPU will also overheat and the system will shutdown.

What if the system battery is bad? You know the little round silver battery on the motherboard? Do they still have those?

                4Try a new PSU, I'd recommend a Cooler Master 80 Plus gold 1000W.

HSF caused a similar problem in a client's comp. I saw that the fan was not moving at all. Replaced the whole HSF combo and all is good now.

I have the cooler master 600w and it kicks butt. I like the fan on it. Looks and runs real professional. was only $40 bucks too. Cooler Master seems to be a good brand

I use nothing but PC Power & Cooling and Seasonic power supplies. They cost a bit more but when a cheapo powersupply fails it often takes everything else with it.

The small battery holds the CMOS settings, PC should boot fine with out one, usually you would just have to hit F1.

CMOS? That little monkey on Planet of the apes? J/K

Yes i remember now, I had the same problem with the Dell I just trashed. "System battery is low, please hit F1 key to continue"... Annoying as hell.

confirming that a processor overheat condition can trigger a power supply shutdown with no warning? My rig is a home brew Asus Crosshair Mb with water cooling on cpu, never had an overheat problem even when coolant was low (was low enough to cause pump to lose prime and make loud noises as it tried
to push air!) that was over a year ago refilled the rsevoir and worked fine.

Well now that we know that we know a bit more. Different mobos act differently based on how they are programed. It COULD be possible also (do not rule it out yet if it has not been confirmed) that the mobo is starting to fail. There are sets of regulators or whatnots over near the CPU. My g/f's system had one turn kinda sideways. (because it failed and heat did that) and it would just shut off. If you replace the PSU and you know for a fact that the CPU is NOT overheating then pull out the mobo and look underneath for browning in certain spots. I can always get photos of what I am talking about, I have that mobo still around here I think. Her brother's did the same thing. After about 3 years it started shutting off on him. Turned out to be a mobo issue. Sucked cause I was all ready to sell him a PSU... >
