Try a reboot, then hit WinUpdates again.

    If that does not resolve:
    Right-click computer, click manage.
    a) Expand "Services and...", then click Services.
Find the Windows Update service to the right, right click Windows Update and hit stop.

Browse to \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete everything inside there.

Reference "a)" above and this time click "Start" rather than "Stop".

Try windows update again. If it works, then Windows whacked itself keeping track of updates. This starts the whole process over from scratch.

If not, then let us know.

Clean installs, only way to go.

Did you also try googling the error code?

          Indeed.

          I have not upgraded a M$ OS since Win98ish.

It even takes less time, and no software compatibility to worry about, AND you can uninstall applications (in the past, you might have issues after an OS upgrade).

I did as stated and it did not work. I restored the deleted files from the recycle.

IF you are using Norton 360, disable it 1st, (hell...uninstall it) then try one last time. Norton blocks so much network traffic that it gets gets stuck on stupid even if you didn't specifically tell it to block anything.

If all else fails: Backup Data, Clean install.

You can do that from a Win7 Upgrade disk if I recall correctly.

Hell, if you do not blow out the partition, you can just install over the top, and select NOT to upgrade, if memory serves me right.

What version did you upgrade from?

Depends on if it was from a previous version of Windows or an Anytime Upgrade. Anytime Upgrade works just fine.
