They don't make the switches, they buy them from another company. And they are tested to ensure that on average they will last x number of clicks. The rating is even listed on the box.

It also doesn't make sense to assume that a similar looking switch is the same switch or has the same life expectancy. A Cherry MX clear vs. a Cherry MX red would be examples of different switches from the same manufacturer and even the same product line that are built and behave differently. There are of course cheap clones that cost probably 1/10th as much, and work as well as expected for something that costs 1/10th the price.

They did not list the number of clicks on the box when optical mice became the new standard.

Get the non-bluetooth version if you want one of these. Be warned though - if you can find one new in the box, you're going to pay.

The change to bluetooth seems to be when they cheaped out on the microswitches. Mine's been going strong since 2005 or 2006, and I spend 9-10 hours a day pushing it around at work. I had the MX 705 at home, it got the double click problem after a year or so, and I bought the Performance MX, which replaced the Revolution. It is nothing but a pale imitation of the Revolution. It works, but that's about the best I can say for it.
