For the longest time I wondered how they caught people. How often to people get fined for the extra juice? I know a lot of guys that op above the legal limit, but I've never talked to someone who got busted.

It happens all the time, especially with modified CB radios since it interferes with quite a bit of stuff. Truckers often do these mods and get caught during inspections too.
So yeah, have fun with that.

EDIT: And if your modified radio interferes with any public safety radio systems or medical equipment you are looking at a felony. If your interference causes someone to die, well you get the idea.

Oh you're talking about modifying a CB radio. I was wondering about people getting in trouble for upping the power on a 2.4 GHz wifi radio. I wouldn't play with a c/b for the exact reasons you describe, but have you ever heard of someone getting fined for turning up the power on an alfa? That band is too far from cb to interfere, and I just don't expect that anyone would even be close enough to notice that you were putting 1w through your alfa.

Upping the power on 2.4GHz can interfere with some public safety systems and medical devices. The FCC has limits in place for a reason.

I don't doubt that they have their reasons, but I'd like to know what the reason is for using frequencies in the 2.4GHz band for public safety and medical devices... With how quickly companies are trying to implement wide area 2.4GHz networks, it would be kinda silly so stick those systems on the same band. Not to mention the fact that now that they're in the same band anyone with a wifi radio can mess with interfere with those systems.

Just seems kinda backwards to me. Also, I thought that most public safety and what-not used 4.9GHz mesh networks, no? I guess that might still interfere since it could be exactly twice the frequency of some of the wifi channels...?

EDIT: Googled around a little and got some info on 2.4GHz ISM. Wow. I wonder how that's going to hold up over the next 10 years.

EDIT2: Another thing, how the hell does time warner get away with r@ping my entire neighborhood with their POS everywhere-you-go wifi networks under fcc regulation?

Which is why unlicensed use of the 2.4GHz spectrum is limited to 500mW (.5 Watt).

                Unlicensed use.
So... if time warner can not only get away with unlicensed use of 2.4GHz devices on practically every wifi channel all over LA, but advertise that they're doing so, should one really expect to get fined for powering one wifi radio past .5 watts in the real world?

That would really depend on the circumstances. And are you sure they're using every channel? I would think they'd only be using one or two.

Ugh I can post a ss of my inSSIDer if you want but man it's ugly. Right now I've got 13 different macs all with the ssid "TWCWifi" spread across channels 1, 3, 6, 8, and 11 lol. That's thru a regular .5w radio too.

I'd file a complaint with the FCC.

I'm not very much of a complaint filer myself, and for some reason I don't expect that my complaint will stop them from taking a montezuma dump on the wifi band, especially since they advertise it.

I won't lie tho, I am temped now that you mention it.

The quickest and easiest way is to raise your access point, for better coverage.

Just to clear things up the average little router for home use is never going to push .5 watts

JDay and Demo are talking about another issue.
