I recently moved my PC to another area of the house and now my WIFI sucks in my room, makes it fairly annoying to get a signal. Looking for an effective, fairly inexpensive way to boost the signal throughout the house.

WIFI boost

Several different ways, several different reasons. You may wish to describe your current wifi and client environment in detail, and any analysis you may have thus far about it.
Keep in mind simply, you moved out of reasonable range of your device. Also bear in mind the type of walls, material in between, and angle of walls from the point to point of the client to the device are all things you need to consider. Buying up doesn't necessarily fix that, and moving to 5ghz can make that worse."Just leave me alone, I know what to do." - Kimi Raikkonen

i dumped WIFI long ago and moved to netgear "homeplug" for my pc's networking and havnt looked back i dont miss dropped and weak signals from WIFI but not that cheap depending on how many home plugs you need .....
if you must run WIFI try a repeater/bridge can be done with DDWRT (free firmware) and a cheap wrt54g router around 30 bucks if you are not running "n"....Originally posted by Ronald ReaganBefore I refuse to take your questions, I have an opening statement.Comment

a lot of different ways to do this
need more details...
at least
Area (sq ft) the wifi needs to cover
how many walls and what material are the walls/what is inside them
your current Wifi Router
your current wifi adapter on your machine
your current signal strength
your desired signal strength
budget
but the best way?
Run a wire through the attic/crawl space you wont regret itLast edited by Montu; 05-14-2012, 2:35 PM.K.F.K|Μολὼν λαβέComment

Agreed: Real computers, ROKU, XBOX 360's, and all that is important stuff is wired.
WiFi for all the the Android devices, kid's computer, and laptops(, and the wired ALWAYS WINS).
Well THAT, OR you could try something like this: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-ma...m-foil-272913/ or a better adapter and direct the signal "just a bit".
Once you go wired, it is hard to stay wireless... but my house came pre-wired, with FiOS, so I bought it.
A computer case "as the crow flies" between the AP/router and the Ant. will cause some extra lag too, as metal deflects signal (and wood absorbs, is what a Cisco guy doing a wireless survey told me).Last edited by the86d; 05-14-2012, 3:46 PM.Comment

Switch over to a 5GHz platform and dump the commonly used 2.4Ghz wifi. 5Ghz has more overlapping channels which means hardly any radio interference.Comment

You can either move your access point to a better location in your house (try moving it towards the center of the house) or you can get a wireless repeater (marketed as "Wireless Range Extender").
Let me stop you right there. First off those adapters only transmit at 100mW by default. Secondly, it is illegal in the US to transmit over 500mW (.5W) on unlicensed spectrum per FCC regulations. You can get into serious trouble for violating the law here.Last edited by JDay; 05-14-2012, 3:54 PM.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

I really highly doubt that you can get a 1W of signal from a 1W power source, but if I am wrong correct me.
Careful the WiFi police will be taking your "WiFi slingshots"... in a raid, when Obama becomes Full Dictator.Last edited by the86d; 05-14-2012, 4:06 PM.Comment

Here are some links that describe what I did:

Once you load a Linksys WRT54G router with an firmware like Tomato you can boost your wifi signal thru the firmware.
Take care,

Depends on what chipset your router has. And if your router has bad antenna you can make the problem worse by boosting the signal. Here are some links that describe what I did:

why dont u just get a directional antenna for the wifi radio you have on the comp? If you're buying that alfa card then you can just hook that baby right up and aim it.
And ya it is def illegal to juice up that radio to 1W here. In reality I dno how "big" of "trouble" you'd get in, or how common it is for perpetrators of this heinous crime to be discovered and charged.Last edited by dem0critus; 05-25-2012, 1:19 PM.Comment

There is a sec software that allows you to open the adapter to op at 1watt . I can careless about the FCC as iv ran liner amps on CB radios for years. The adapter is legal to use. If you want to lower the watts in the software to be legal do it. If you drive 1mph over the speed limit you also break the law. I take it you are the guy driving 55mph on the hwy as well.

The Alfa software allows you to turn the power up. I'm also surprised you haven't been fined by the FCC for operating CB above the legal limits.
