Yes, but windows users are used to getting malware and can generally tell when their computer is not behaving correctly. Doesn't mean they don't click on every attachment they get, but it means they are able to recognize something is wrong later. Mac users seem to actually believe the "theres no viruses on a Mac" and have no clue whats going on other than "Its a mac, it always just works". Thats what I meant by that.

Yeah, we could go with that, or my experience in 16 years Ive been doing admin and network work. Admittedly not for a huge company, only a couple thousand users spread out around Socal. Others experience may differ. Mac apologist?

For the record, I HATE Windows.

But then I guess I dont know too much about these newfangled things. Im thinking they may catch on someday though...

Disguising the malware as a usually trusted utility is very good 'social engineering' - and all operating systems are subject to user intervention.

And believe your original statement to be slightly more absurd knowing your a systems administrator. Not trying to get into an argument with you, just can't believe you have that mentality/attitude toward all mac users because you have a couple thousand that you let cry on your shoulder.

I too am an IT professional, before that i was an audio engineer (protools run on a mac) after that a video editor (final cut pro & avid media composer run on macs). All in hollywood and all reputable companies None of which matters here and now!

But then I guess I dont know too much about these newfangled things either!

As an IT professional you always have to pick your words. The statement "Mac's can't get viruses" is completely wrong, and never true. However, "Not as many viruses effect macs" or "You are less likely to get a virus on a mac" are both true.

It's all about market share, and Mac's don't have it.

It seems as of late that OS X is starting to pick up some market share. With desktop virtualization becoming more popular, we're starting to see some IT departments shift to BYOD (bring your own device), which is definitely helping Apple. I think we're going to see more attacks on the Mac OS - Apple is going to need to be able to respond to these exploits significantly more quickly than they have been in the past and be significantly more transparent about their "security bulletin" updates.

If it matters at all, I consider myself platform agnostic. I run windows on my desktop for games (was using ubuntu & slack on the desktop for a while during a period of non gaming), and use a macbook air as a laptop. I'm equally comfortable with windows as well as osx and slightly less comfortable with other *nix systems, but pretty confident I can work with any distro.

Just curious, why would someone write malware for a print service? I can understand sshd,smb, or nfs. Since OS X is based off, I believe, BSD is there something like SELinux where you can lock everything with permissions?

Yes, it's called TrustedBSD, and I believe these kernel extensions are now part of mainline FreeBSD. In addition to traditional Discretionary Access Control (DAC), the TrustedBSD extensions allow Mandatory Access Control (MAC). Basically, that means no matter what you do to the service, it gets only that which you assign by something called a "security label" to that service. Someone demonstrated this idea dramatically with a GNU/Linux box entirely secured with SELinux. They gave you the root password and said go-fer-it. You indeed were root. But you were locked into a very tiny sandbox. That's the power of MAC vs. DAC.

From my understanding, the TrustedBSD extensions from FreeBSD are in the layer between the XNU microkernel and the userland that translates between XNU and POSIX. So, I'd imagine you could turn this on from within Mac OS X, but I've never tried it.

So, now Apple owners can "MAC their Macs."
