24KB of Ram for $485. Good deal?

I found an old 1979 flyer from Bill Godbout Electronics. From the early years of "home computers" when the S-100 Bus was popular.

$485 for 24K x 8 of RAM doesn't sound so good now, but I remember when these were great prices.

    Technology marches on...

I can remember being stoked to get 1 MB for less than $100.

Heh heh - Paid $600 for a 10Meg - I mean 10 MILLION characters HDD (and it was twice height of most standard drives these days.

I have a similiar ad, that I can't throw away for some reason... It's from BYTE magazine....

WOW. Yall make me feel like a baby...

I remember building my first computer with my dad at the ripe ol age of 16 and because DOOM just came out and it needed 4 MB of RAM and not the 256k that we had in that 80386 that he gave to me. Ended up building an Intel 486 DLC-40 with 4 MB of RAM ($120), a 220MB hand me down drive and a Pro Audio Spectrum Studio 16 Sound Card ($145) to make the screams sound recognizable... I forgot the graphics but it was a VESA Local Bus (VLB) which I later upgraded to a Diamond Stealth PCI for $192. We were running a DSHD mini floppy that had replaced two dsdd 5.25 floppy drives that I used to love to play NFL on. Of course we only had a 16 color screen and used the 4 colors before the 486... I later purchased a 3GB Western Digital HD that was IDE and it cost me $295 and I had to use their weird software to use it . Later on I picked up a SCSI Sony CD Burner at 2x with a caddy for $395 and of course my first CDROm drive was I think $92 and it was a panasonic 4x...

                Very cool find!

I like seeing stuff like that. I remember when my dad got the family computer a 4MB ram upgrade back in the days, it cost about $400.

Yes, I also played DOOM haha.

My workstation today is was probably better than the supercomputers of that time lol. Somewhat humbling when you think about how juiced our computers are today.

                  I love old ads.

My grandma always had the old Sears' catalogs from like 1901. So cool to see what things used to cost.

Awesome! So... what year was that?

Orange screen or green screen on the monitor?

Heh... 16MB HDD. Almost enough to hold 4 MP3's.

my first pc was a hewlette packard 486, 60 meg HD, 4 megs of ram!, 2400 modem, 256 color graphics card, 3.5 floppy AND 4x cdrom!!!

it was pretty much the most badass thing going in 1990. got doom, warcraft, kings quest, metal marines, and a few others i cant think of, played against buddies 1 on 1 over the modem too. it was pretty amazing until the pentiums came out and then win 95. i agree, computers used to be more fun. remember when quake came out?? that was the quantum leap in gaming, the basis of fps'.

Any of us has enough computing juice now to run the first Space Shuttle.
