lets talk about Win 8 ... anyone running the beta?

so what do you all think of Windows 8 ?

i was going to grab a copy of the beta, but have too many beta tests going on right now to be testing a new o/s also

to me from what i have seen and read its well suited for tablets and other "touch screens", but doesn't look like something i would want on mouse/keyboard desktop...

so what say you folks is Win8 a winner or loser ?

Waiting until Windows 9. 7 works fine for now, I think 8 is going to another "Vista" or "Win98ME " iteration of horrible OS from MS.

Win95, good albiet it was buggy.
    Win95 OSR2, improvment
    Win98, nice
    Win98SE, nicer
    Win98ME: WTF? They wrecked it!
Win2000: ah better, while we wait for...
    WinXP: better, stable, good stuff
    Vista: ****
Win 7: Pretty decent though they messed up some stuff like networking, also too many different versions
Win 8: From what I've seen so far I expect it to be a net loss in terms of improvement over 7.

I see no reason why MS can't continue with Win 7 for a few more years, greedy *******

P.S. Would also be nice if MS just had ONE iteration of an OS, no more of this Home/Professional/Enterprise BS. Save that crap for server OS.

"If it ain't broke, don't break it more." This is how I see M$ software now a days.

I don't want to have to buy an i7 just to run the next version of Windows.

I am probably going to take the plunge into Slackware on all my home PCs, as Windows 8 Beta doesn't appear to be anything I want, desire, nor have a need for.

I really am sick of buying software and hardware, when the old stuff works more than fine if running Linux, AND I still wouldn't have the Apple-Tax associated either...

If it was written mostly in India, mostly untested, like the failure Vista, and with my the issues with Win7, then I don't want any.

lmao i have to agree and even posted almost word for word what you have here , but deleted it from my OP not to taint others views on Win8 .... so i am not alone in thinking this is just anoughter money grabbing o/s pushed out there to the wild

It is worth trying, and it is not Vista by any means but a good progression on Windows 7 itself. I have been playing with the developer preview and now the consumer preview, in all sense they have a winner here. Best of both worlds, and a slick and fluid UI

Everything is going like this now. It's like ****ing cars. New model every year. I hate it. I've been working in software now for 13 years, before that I worked 2 years in hardware and I hate the way the industry is going.

Everything will end up being subscription based in the future. I mean everything. One day this will include operating systems as well.

OTOH I'm finding I have less and less uses for PC's outside of work beyond playing some games, web browsing, and that's about it. Movies and music of course, but I'm close to the point where Linux will be able to handle all of my at-home computing needs.

Once the game industry is finished ruining gaming altogether that will probably be the point where I shift completely to Linux. I'm tired of Mac too, it was good for awhile, but more and more they are doing the bloat thing with their OS iterations and that's just like MS.

But you know? I actually kind of like this in a way, I read more like I used to 15 years ago.

Still, in the end, computers will be the death of us all, our over-reliance on them has made our society too fragile to survive without them. Most of the people younger than 24 or so I see in this industry have almost no life skills and their social skills are... weak to say the least. That will only get worse as people communicate more through devices rather than FTF or voice.

so you like that cluttered screen on a desktop?

like i said before it looks to be made and optimized for a touch screen which is not suited well for use as a desktop computer

and yes i have seen that vid and most that M$ have put out on win8, and was a very early beta tester for win7 along with beta testing hardware and software products from a few vendors , so i know what to expect from alpha/beta products, just dont have the time to play with a new o/s right now as my beta plate is full

Exactly what I've been seeing myself. It's basically a touch screen tablet OS. Not suited to professional computer use, probably a pain in the *** to support in a corporate environment (so I expect MS won't be making a lot of sales there) although I could see it being useful in Point Of Sale systems, particularly ones that are more self-service style.

But that's not how I use a computer at work or home!

Do not want windows 7 tablet edition on my desktop, regardless of whether or not they want to call it "Windows 8".

This is going to be an absolute mess in an actual work environment, a cluttered mess for my use at home... I don't understand wtf they're thinking. Sure, if I was giving my grandma a touchscreen kiosk of a computer I could see the use for this, but everyone else? No.

Earlier MS said they were going to have 3 editions, now it's 9. Wtf?

Enterprise, Enterprise Eval(umm... what?), Home basic, Home Premium(not this **** again), ARM edition(what desktop is running an ARM CPU? Oh wait, none. It's for tablets), Professional, Professional plus(wtf?), Starter(then what the hell is home basic?), and Ultimate(so... professional but with a media manager application?)

And that's not even getting into the various N and K editions.

I have it installed on a virtual machine.

The initial "touchpad" interface is completely wasted on a regular PC. I don't even waste my time here and instead, head straight for the "normal" desktop.

In that sense both iOS and Android grids are cluttered, static and dead. Metro is more live, and desktop is click away unless click is too much of effort for some.

I don't want a "live" user interface. I want a static and dead user interface that keeps things nice and organized with a minimal amount of anything displayed at any given time.

but that still leaves all those "apps" running doesnt it? or can you completly shut down and stop the "live" crap from running

MS needs to pay SERIOUS attention to the efficiency of their OS lately. I mean I am not a fanboy of macs, but their os's take far less resources to operate and are smaller on the drive itself. Windows 7 is not a vast improvement from xp, but is twice as heavy.....

Also, directx 11.1 is hardly worth the moneys since basic dx 11 is not utilized in games yet to its full potential.
