the burden relies on whatever you are trying to implement. OpenLDAP is certainly flexible enough, it would likely be a burden placed on your developers and IT architects AND their relationship(s) with the 3rd party offering you are hoping to apply it to.

With the proliferation of just about every enterprise level piece of software coming with a verbose API - the only reason something can not be accomplished is lack of talent or lack of ROI (be that actual or perceived).

edit: sorry probably not the answer you're looking for haha

edit 2: Customization is a feared thing by IT departments and for good reason. So I understand those lamentations

lol...not really, but I know what it is and what it entails. I was being a little facetious because of all the exchange/AD hate.

I think one could argue that anyone who virtualizes multiple operating systems and/or applications for the sake of high availability is using cloud methodology in a sense. But that isn't even on topic with the OP....... I'm a little surprised this thread got bumped actually, lol.

Not for small and medium sized business it doesn't, which is my bread and butter. Im not an IT guy working for a single company, we manage the IT infrastructure for a wider verity of companies. It's hard to beat SBS.

I'm trying to get my boss to move to something like solve360, because GoldMine is an old beast that I want to put down once and for all...

subjective and i guess it depends on the organization but gmail + gdocs for business can easily and painlessly replace exchange. just imho

after working with bpos, intermedia, and office 365 i just dont like not having the control. i have spent countless hours with their tech support people resolving relatively basic issues i could have resolved myself in minutes with access to the actual box.

If you want your own domain the correct product would be Google Apps, but I agree, with what you are saying.

It is subjective. He is talking about from an IT guy standpoint... which is why he shot down Office 365 / BPOS / even Google Apps. Its lost revenue to him.

From a business owners standpoint, you no longer need him and you can one-man-band your own environment.

SMB market is huge, and extremely profitable. Most small shops don't have dedicated in-house IT staff, and need to out source. Every IT company I interview tried to push SBS onto me with a maintenance/support plan. I told them to GTFO and did it all myself saving thousands. More and more SMB shops are moving to cloud hosted solution.

I get what you are saying... I like control myself as I am the one managing the systems for our own shop. But you have to look at it from an end user standpoint. Someone who actually needs these services and doesn't want or cant afford on premise equipment and support, hosted solutions are huge.

As of Office 365, advanced users can manage the entire thing using Windows Powershell.

You'd be surprised the level of control Gmail / Gapps allows admins. Its come a long way in the last year. I can appreciate the perspective of "wanting to make sure you have work " - just because it's physically no longer your responsibility doesn't mean it doesn't require real IT professionals to admin

also kinda unrelated but the Google Search Appliance is badass

on a very related note : Anyone see what Sony is trying to do with their next Playstation ? They are trying to figure out a way to never transfer physical game ownership to the end user and instead sort out some sort of "cable tv" licensing style with everything being hosted.

I hate the idea @ present because the breadth of content is no where near the size needed to justify a syndication licensing approach - basically they are trying to make a "pay per view" console gaming experience. Should be interesting
