Skyrim or BF3: Last Game Purchase For A While

Okay, wife and I are getting ready to go on a budget-mad craze in an attempt to pay off both our cars by the end of the year if possible. I have 5 years left on mine, she has 4 and a half, so this will be a major undertaking, absorbing virtually every bit of spare cash that we have available.

This means that whatever game I purchase today will be the last game I get to buy for the next quite a while. I'm looking at Skyrim or BF3, and I would like your suggestions as to which.

I want to make the purchase at 1600 PST, today, 15JAN12. That's 1 hour from now.

I'd like your suggestions and the reasoning behind them.

BF3 is good, but theres an end.
Skyrim has no real end, you can change character types, and play a long time.
Even not changing character types, there are many missions/side quests to do.
I play BF3 still every so often when i'm playing with the kids

    I vote Skryim.

Battlefield 3 is a great game, but realistically the online playability will only last as long as there is a large number of people still playing it, which means next big FPS release there will be a mass exodus of players playing BF3 to play whatever the lastest craze is. Skyrim will probably be the best choice if you are looking something to occupy yourself long term.

I definitely think that the priority is longevity. I bet they're both fun (I have BF3), quality games. I don't know much about Skyrim, hopefully there is plenty of missions/quests/whatever to keep you occupied aside from the main one. BF3 is going to last me a good while since they'll release new maps at some point to keep it fresh. I mainly play multiplayer, I have yet to finish the single player campaign. The game modes offer a nice variety that offers some intense matches. I hear the co-op is fun and that'll add to longevity after you finish the campaign.

Well, it's 1600, and I bought Skyrim via Steam, downloading now.

I've got BF:BC2, played the hell out of it when it first came out, but it did get played out relatively quickly. I'll probably still get BF3 at some point, but it won't be the immediate future. Probably at a Christmas sale or something. I had 2142 as well, but didn't enjoy it. Less said about that one the better, really.

I have Morrowind and Oblivion both, and I've enjoyed the hell out of them, played the hell out of them, and modded the hell out of Morrowind. I'm hoping that Skyrim will be as much fun as those were.

I had this exact same decision to make, between the same two games, and I went with Skyrim. It is bigger and even more vast than what I imagined, and occupies a ton of time without even scraping the surface.

I love both, but I would get Skyrim. 200+ hours of gameplay. FPS get repetitive after 20 or so.

my attention span is short so i cant really play Skyrim. ive played oblivion and never managed to finish it or bothered to finish it even if i wanted to do so since i just get bored.

BF3 on the other hand is fun but its limited to only a handful of maps and styles of play.

btw for Skyrim do you have to read the dialog? or does everyone talk there so u can just listen and not read? thats what got me for oblivion... i hate reading everything

Having both I would say BF3 and join the Calguns group.

I pretty much stopped plying skyrim for now, maybe i'll get back to it eventually.

Oh wait, is this for PC or Console? I would defiantly not want to play buy BF3 if your buying it for a console. If your buying for a console Skyrim all the way. Both will have crappy console graphics, but at Skyrim is very playable on a controller, BF3 well not so much....

Yep, just throwing in my two cents. And making a point that a lot of opinions may be based off assuming PC or Console.
