SOPA Bill

Umm, it's been brought up many times on this site over the past few months, and has been well covered for quite a while now on a variety of websites. It's just that there has been ZERO mainstream media coverage(gee, I wonder why), and it's only finally becoming widespread with companies discussing "blackouts" at the last minute.
Of course here is the MPAA calling the protests "dangerous stunts"

Actually, according to Wired, VPNs and Tor aren't protected in the bills so it could be open season on them too:The Tor Project is gonna find a lot of new users soon.

Apparently Reid is trying to push through the bills next week. Not surprising, since he's a close friend of former Senator Dodd, who's now the head of the MPAA. And Lamar Smith plans to push the bills in 2 weeks seeing how he's sponsored by pro-SOPA and PIPA corporations (read: $94 million given to Congress members by lobbyists for pro-SOPA and PIPA in the third quarter last year alone).
See the lobbying amounts here:
More info on the bought-off politicians behind the bills (rather long, but worth a good read; they actually did some good research):

Tor and VPN can't be touched by SOPA or PIPA unless you're actively kicking connections from specific IPs off of the internet entirely. Not going to happen even with these bills, as VPNs and Tor do not rely on DNS or even ISP specific connectivity.
By the way, Marco Rubio finally got his head out of his rectum and withdrew support from PIPA(the bill he co-sponsored) today, and asked Reid to drop it as well.
A Better Way to Fight the Online Theft of American Ideas and Jobs By Senator Marco Rubio In recent weeks, we’ve heard from many Floridians about the anti-Internet piracy bills making their way...
I think the blackouts made their point(doesn't mean it should all come to a stop, because like I said before you know damn well they're going to try this again and again).Last edited by Merc1138; 01-18-2012, 2:02 PM.Comment

Seems the head of facebook also publicly made a statement against SOPA/PIPA as well yesterday.
Additionally, a small number of journalists, some gaming websites, and even some developers are also boycotting E3 until the ESA withdraws support from SOPA as well. Unfortunately considering the cash involved for the bigger publishers, I doubt this will have as much impact.
PIPA is getting amended, but there's no telling how "fixed" it will become, and they'll still likely try to ram it through http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/tech...opponents.htmlLast edited by Merc1138; 01-19-2012, 12:43 PM.Comment
