New bill by Congress to police the internet.

Gives media companies and the government the right to regulate what shows up in search engines, and track that data. They can also demand access to sites they "suspect" of "hosting" pirated material, and user information. Anything they say to remove, must be removed.

They'll probably use it to harass sites they don't like, and other nefarious uses.

The damage that either of these bills will do is summed up in my lengthy reply in that other thread, and NMCI compnerd who replied failed to realize how drastic of a change either of these bills are when it comes to copyright law enforcement.

I haven't heard anything good about either bill. If the DMCA went too far, SOPA put the Constitution in the paper shredder. All legal action should come AFTER fair trial by court. Never BEFORE.

Don't worry about it. Stuff like this just pushes innovation. The government is always a few steps behind. People will always get what they want no matter how many bureaucrats brag of its "success".

I liken it to trying to hold a handful of water. If you keep your grip loose you can hold it all. Make a fist and it all winds up outside your grasp. So yeah, bring on those laws. Eventually we will all be criminals and it won't matter anymore what we do (since, hey we're criminals anyway right?).

Exactly. DMCA at least included fair use and didn't throw due process under the bus. There's actually a lot of companies removing their support from the bills because they're realizing how much it screws them in the long run by having to do things like file claims against simple fan websites. Pretty much the only major supporters at this point are the movie/music companies. Of course we all know how easily the MPAA and RIAA accept change

I would be delighted if that Internet "Nuke" actually goes off... It's a good way to spread the word real quick about anti-constitutional bills being passed under the noses of Americans.

This deserves a bump.

To sum it up, what endangers the internet as we know it is the ability for the govt to shut down websites like this off the smallest copyright infringement.

For example: someone here quotes something from another site (that never happens right?) .. this legislation opens the doors to allow for legal action resulting in 'calguns.net' domain being taken away from the owners.

It may shut down a few legitimate rogue websites, but it will certainly be abused to take down legitimate sites we all use. Think about Antis trying to exploit this bill to shut down a site like Calguns.

It will enable our government to censor what sites we can access here in the U.S. ... kinda like China.

Is it just me or what? I'm starting to realize that the free America I once knew, will no longer be the free America there once was. Yes, WAS, past tense.
It seems to me that everyday that goes by I wake up to a new bill with certain limitations to what we can, and not do with our daily lives. Not that this bill includes that, but we're not far from it from happening. Big corporations are just getting bigger while smaller companies are disappearing. The rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

Interesting.

That said, even if these two particular bills get shot down(more and more companies are pulling support for them, or outright protesting them. When the big corporations get scared of laws that restrict freedoms, you know something is seriously ****ed up with the legislation). It doesn't mean that these bills are done for good, it also doesn't mean that people need to just forget about it because you can bet your *** of these bills get officially shot down, they'll be back in some form or another within a year.
