Dropped my 2 TB HDD now it won't work...HELP!!!!!

So I dropped my 2 TB external HDD about 1 1/2 ft and now my laptop won't recognize it.

The HDD just makes some beeping noises.

The HDD is a Hitachi XL2000

    I also own a Acomdata 250gb

What are the steps to recovering the info? Can I just swap drive from the Hitachi and put it in the Acomdata enclosure and hope it works?

    Please help!

Put it in the freezer for a few hours.

I saw that recommended on some Google searches, why would that help?

A foot and a half is not much. Was the hard drive on when it fell?

            Uh oh...

Most likely its a gonner. Try the freezer trick, it may work.

Sounds like you caused a full head crash. Bad stuff.

Yep, sounds like you bounced a head (or more) off platters. Two outcomes from this are that one (or more) head(s) is(are) damaged, in which case data recovery is expensive, or you scratched the platters. If the platters are just scratched, recovery software (like what I use) might be able to restore access long enough to suck data off the drive. If heads are damaged, then the drive will need to be disassembled in a "clean bench", so the heads can be repaired/replaced or the platters can be transferred to a working base. Software recovery can be a few hundred dollars, but if the drive needs repair, it can cost several thousand. It all boils down to "How much is the data on that drive worth?" to decide what to do.

Can you hear the hard drive platters spin up? If it doesn't spin, you're SOL and will have to contact a data recovery service.

This is a good reminder to all that you should have a backup of your data.

I've used this software more then I cant count for clients that have had severe HD crashes. Usually if the drive powers up it can salvage an amazing amount of data.

Prosoft Engineering Inc, offers software to undelete your important files, detect malware, monitor your computer, and create backups.

freezer is last resort, try the drive in the other enclosure or right in the computer and see if it spins up you could have just cracked the board in the drive enclosure ..... good luck

You can also take out the hard drive and hook it up inside the computer if it is SATA. It will be much faster to do recovery that way. A full on data recovery place is going to charge about five or six Thousand to work on it.

Can you imagine? 2TB's! And it had a secret onion ring/bacon & pho recipe on it! lol

I did purchase this HD as the replacement:

It sounds like I will do a combo of Bryansix's & Daveinwoodlands method come next paycheck.

                          Thanks guys!

Try a low level drop while its powered. 2" at most, its worked as alast resort for me.
