    Is it a Dell?

Try uninstalling the whole video driver package and reinstalling them fresh from the manufacturers website.

Have you checked to see if there are any updates or patches for your game?

If it runs for a while and then gets the BSOD, check and make sure all your fans are running. It may be a cooling issue.

uuuhhh, BSOD is not generic. It usually says, right there in the BSOD message, what caused the BSOD.

if you can provide that, preferably in the form of a picture, we can better help.

or the event log entries before the bsod, those help as well.

not a dell. I put it together a couple years ago with mostly high end parts. It used to run half-life games without any problems.

I just bought the game and downloaded it from steam, so i would think it's got everything. There are no update notifications.

it only runs about 1 out of 5 times, every other time it locks up as soon as i join a server. when it finally does run is when i get the BSOD. It sounds like all my fans are working, but I'll clean the filter and check as best i can.

            thanks for the help, all.

This is my guess. Computers get pretty damn dirty inside.

                  This.

Although the event log should also log the actual STOP error also, so you can give us the error code.

Also, go to System in control panel, under Error Handling and Recovery (or whatever it's called, I can't be arsed to play along at home) set it to write a minidump file (not a full memory dump) when the system halts.

Then upload the file. I'm sure one of us can find time to run it through and find the module that's actually faulting.

What game is it? Are you sure your computer meets the minimum required specs to play the game? Maybe not enough memory?

Its day of defeat source, a half life mod. I only have 2 gigs of ram but it used to play fine.a year or two ago when before i reformatted the hard drive and reloaded everything. The vid card is 8800 gt.

specs sound okay for source mods.

you can go to start -> run -> eventvwr
                          then go to system/application logs
and go to the last time you had a BSOD (the logs will go back that far) and post all warning and critical alerts logged 60 seconds before the bsod. we dont need the informational logs.

You still haven't uploaded the minidump file, although from that it occurred during an attempt to read from memory.

Still need the minidump to say which instruction was responsible for reading at that time.
