    Terrible Xbox 360 HDMI graphics?

I was running Composite HD A/V cables on my original Xbox 360; I am now running a "made in china" gold plated HDMI cable from my new Xbox 360 slim. It seems as if graphics aren't that impressive as I thought they would be. My LCD television is a 32" LG 1080p with 120mhz Tru Motion..

Battlefield 3 Campaign, Crysis 2 campaign, all look like doo-doo.. The only game that looks nice is Gears of War 3, but it's copied on my harddrive (20gb transferred HDD)

    Any ideas?

HDMI v.1 or v1.3 or v1.3a or v1.4? The higher v. are usually just for 3d but do make a slight difference. Do you have another cable to test?

when you say composite HD, do you mean component cable?

there is no video quality gain on an xbox 360 between component and HDMI.

The only clear advantage to HDMI is that it transfers digital audio over the same cable, but thats not really an issue for you right now.

the only other thing HDMI has over component is 1080P, component only goes to 1080i - but that's also irrelevant because xbox 360 games are all 720p anyway.

the only thing i can think of is that when you switches between the two, it reset your output resolution on the xbox. go into the options and make sure that one of the HD video output options is still selected.

        Correct.

Should I select a 720p output instead of 1080p output in my Xbox 360 console settings?

One point of my concern is characters looked more detailed when I was using "Component HD" A/V cables instead of HDMI (Battlefield 3 multiplayer)

i would choose 1080i - the dashboard supports 1080, and if you have the hd dvd player for your box thats 1080 as well. games though are 720. however, choosing 1080 in the settings wont reduce the quality of the 720 games.

technically speaking, provided you are using a 720+ resolution on both the component and the HDMI cables, there should be no visually distinguishable difference between the two.

usually an issue with the physical cable itself will result in artifacting or other visual disparities - it should not result in lower detailed assets within the game. the only thing that would effect that should be the overall resolution.

Very good points. However, what technicality explains the fact that I used to be able to distinctly recognize tire tread patterns on idle vehicles in Battlefield 3 Multi with my Component HD A/V cable; now the tires are blurred, as are a majority of in-game physical attributes ie backpacks, chest rigs/harnesses

The only factor I can think about is my harddrive swap:

I recently swapped my original 20gb harddrive into my brand-new Slim model. Perhaps the above execution is directly causing the obvious visual disparities?

did you take my very first recommendation and confirm your system is still pushing 1080 after you swapped cables? go to the options in the dashboard and just make sure.

Yes, sir. I did. I've selected and played with 1080i, 720p, and 1080p in the last 10 minutes.

and if you shut down your xbox, switch the cables back and play - its back to normal?

i know there was a bug with installing BF3 to the HDD causing reduced textures, which might have something to do with it.

                    Xbox 360 250gb Black: $300 (whole console)
GTX 560 Ti: $300 (pc graphics card)

Do you really expect the graphics to be that good in the first place?

Even my ps3 properly set up with HDMI cables looks old and outdated.

I noticed that on my xbox too. I stopped using it since january. Even netflix looks better on PS3.
                        Have a good day!

I installed the game on my HDD and it's running a lot more smoother/clearer. I solved my problem for BF3; now I'm going to delete the game and install Crysis 2 to see if the graphics improve

so installing the game improved the graphics.

so you did not test the 2 cables before/after installing?

I did. The comparison between the component HD a/v cables and HDMI cable was null. Very weird that installing the game restored the graphics because I did not have the game installed previously.
