The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. -
Using a proxy server, or better yet, multiple chained proxies, is an effective technique. Just make sure you test them using some of the available tools out there (google them up), because some proxy servers DO pass along IP or machine information. You can't take it for granted they won't. You need to test them and verify.
And if you're really paranoid, try to use proxy servers that are located in countries unfriendly to the U.S. For example, it's unlikely that the Iranian govt. or an Iranian company would hand over their server logs just because some U.S. company asked for them, or even if the DOJ presented them with a warrant. They'd certainly say "FU!" instead. Which works in your favor, if you're doing stuff online that you probably shouldn't be doing...

i'd avoid public wifi's and such just because of how many places have video recording devices nowadays.
besides posting anonymously just to flame/troll people is a pansy move.Comment

I'm kind of surprised people are recommending public wifi rather than prepaid smartphones.Central Coast Chapter Meetups http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=493387

this is because you can connect to multiple disposable wifi signals within walking distance. each time you do this, it will refresh using a different proxy server, making your hops none the same except at the original hop point.U.S. Army Combat Engineer

True, but from OP's inquiry I got the jist that he would be sending occasional emails not batches. So being multi-honed over multiple wifi networks the email would still originate from a single IP (and single associated MAC address) on the route it was sent.
Your point does make more sense for a longer transaction, or if he's going to be repeatedly delivering mail to a single destination, since if they do filter proxy logs, a disposable cell would undoubtedly reveal a single source network and endpoint MAC address.
But the advantage of a prepaid smartphone is they're essentially disposable, and you can use them just about anywhere. On a bus, inside a movie theater, and other places unlikely to have survelliance. Then you wouldn't have to worry about changing the MAC addy on your hardware since it's new hardware in cash every month or expiration of included service rate.Central Coast Chapter Meetups http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=493387

Agreed, that's chicken-****, but there are other reasons for wanting total anonymity on the net:
- participating in discussions on explosives/drugs/sexual fetish/etc forums
- saying things online that might pique govt. interest, or brand you as a subversive, or a terrorist *gasp!*
- saying unflattering things about an employer
- admitting past crimes where statute of limitations has not passed yet
- starting a company offering payment services for the gun community, and then ripping many of them off, either willfully or through your incompetence...

Lots of options out there - depends how deep you want the cover to go. a web only e-mail service is a good start. The trick is where its acessed from. a laptop and free wifi is good, but the router will know the hardware address. If only using a few times, maybe a handfull of external wifi adapters (that you can toss when complete?) so the hardware address changes every time you log in and using different wifi hotspots will also make it more difficult.Comment

If you really just want to send some email to the local paper a lot of the above is really overkill. There are a few mail providers that strip the originating IP from their headers (Gmail used to be one but I haven't checked recently). They could get your IP with a court order but is there really any chance of that happening? Even if they got it, they'd need another court order at the service provider to get your address.Comment
