untraceable email account-is there such a thing?

With the political races heating up, I want to start making comments in our local throw-away paper. But I want to remain anonymous for job safety reasons. I'm looking for an untraceable or difficult to trace email I can use to register with our local paper. Any suggestions?

      hushmail http://www.hushmail.com/

Hushmail recommends using non web-based services such as GnuPG and PGP Desktop for those who need stronger security

Peace demands solutions, but we never reach living solutions; we only work toward them. A fixed solution is, by definition, a dead solution. The trouble with peace is that it tends to punish mistakes instead of rewarding brilliance.

i dunno how anonymous youre trying to get, but unless you really need to hide. they do have anonymous emails that you can set to terminate after a certain period of time. if you need added protection, proxy servers, run a live cd distro that has TOR builtin along with other encryption and anonymonity features, and then find a disposable connection, ie: net cafe.

I have used Mailinator for a few things.

The thing is that anyone who knows your Mailinator address can read anything in the inbox. It's great for stuff that spams emails.

Thanks for all the tips. Now I've got someplace to start. Public wifi is a great tip.

just don't give away privileged information. and remember that you'll never be completely anonymous. there's only ways to minimize your risk.

IP numbers, Time and Date stamps and often machine information is stored. If you can find a loaner machine at a remote WiFi location to a Hush account you paid cash for, you might attain some anonymity.

you dont need a loaner, you need a live cd distro specifically built for anonyminity. the live cd will not leave a footprint as its run from the ram. the next time you reboot your ram will be flushed. if you run tor it will use different proxy servers to mask your ip and bounce your disposable connection off that. as long as you adhere to that you will be fine. just dont use the same locations. keep your transactions to a minimum because even though you follow these rules, the co ops do log traffic which is unavoidable.

                    From: http://sardjoski.net/kiril/Download/...%20Dummies.pdf

I know you were not asking about hacking, but the concepts are the same.

                    Maintaining Anonymity

Smart hackers want to be as low-key as possible. Covering their tracks is a
priority. In fact, success often depends on it. They don’t want to raise suspicion
so they can come back and access the systems in the future. Hackers
often remain anonymous by using one of the following techniques:
Borrowed or stolen dial-up accounts from friends or previous employers
Public computers at libraries, schools, or kiosks at the local mall
Internet proxy servers or anonymizer services
Anonymous or disposable e-mail accounts from free e-mail services
                    Open e-mail relays
Unsecured computers — also called zombies — at other organizations
Workstations or servers on the victim’s own network

If hackers use enough steppingstones for their attacks, they are hard to trace.

The Onion Router. IP changing setup that is apparently really a great freeware program. I haven't used it but I've heard a lot about it.

The MAC address can be saved, which is unique to the machine, but you can actually change it with a program. Using a machine at a public library would work, although at times they record who is using the computers. Sometimes you can use a machine at a school, but with a change in the way things are today, they might require an ID to enter. In the past, you could just want into some University libraries and use the computers.

There are a lot of logs which are kept and those could be used to track you down, but generally would not be an issue unless you are doing something illegal.
