I noticed my old router was getting more unreliable in that it was needing to be rebooted more often. They seem to wear out over time though I am not sure what could actually wear out.

I finally replaced it and then added a switch since I have so much crap connected wired that I needed some more ports.

if you are killing it with streaming, Wireless-N with multiple spatial streams is your friend. I just replaced my Cisco 1811w ($,$$$) G with a much less expensive E4200 N that performs significantly better for streaming. Kinda like how a $350 laptop today will smoke a $3500 laptop from 4 years ago.

That Buffalo router has dual radios, you can use 5Ghz 802.11n/a devices while you have 2.4Ghz 802.11n/g/b devices connected. You also get 4 wireless access points per radio, for a total of 8.

jday, am hoping to pick on up this week on that buffalo router (or maybe asus). my ddwrt was giving me fits again last night. should be no issue using the ddwrt as a repeater bridge with the buffalo one, right?

i was wondering if the vrambak (from backup restore) file was somehow corrupt or something is causing it to hang. oddly even with just my laptop hardwired straight to router, and router not attached to anything (not even internet), and moving from screen to screen was slow. i can't recall if it was this slow before upgrading to the new bin file (i was on an 08 or 09 version for the longest of time as it was that stable). i upgraded earlier this summer to match as close as possible the version i have on my (then purchased) ddwrt wrt54g to use as a repeater bridge.

else, i may have to open up and see if dust accumulation might be causing some overheating like cpu vent/fans accumulate dust and have to be blown out now and then. it's not like it's hot though as there are no moving parts.

i was going step by step and re-building my setup, saving up each time to a new file. but jeez, that was forever and in the end, nada good results.

even with QOS, static dhcp and port forwarding disabled, i wasn't getting much better performance. oddly my usage is high 90's. i already setup reboot daily. i dont' think anyone is hacking into my network. i check the machines/ip's connecting daily.

i have a switch/hub, and it was weird on one hard reset session that ddwrt assigned it an ip#. but never did after that.
