I've seen these Bose wave radios and stereos selling for hundreds of dollars on ebay and wondered what's so special about them. Anyone own one of these know what's special about the wave stereos that people would pay $700 for them instead of a Sony or JVC stereo for $300?

An old boss had one.
He bought it for the office... liked it so much he bought the bigger version with the CD player for home.- Rich

Much better than most table top radios but really isn't better than a mid priced component stereo system. Look on ebay for nearly new ones. I got one for my dad at the Bose factory outlet for considerably below list, but ebay often has them cheaper. If I were to get one for myself, that's the way to go. There was a time (maybe still) when people got them as office gifts and dumped them on ebay. Similar to Anaheim Angels World Series Championship rings

+1 to both of these. Bose consumer products are a classic example of marketing over function. On the other hand $300 isn't going to buy you much. The question is what are you trying to accomplish?"Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--

It's mainly overhyped. The wave is interesting in that it sends the sound through chambering to embiggen the sound (sorry for the Simpsons reference)... this is much like how Apple put the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad's tiny tiny speaker sound through a sound chamber to make it actually sound half decent.
Otherwise if you look at construction of Bose speaker box construction, they cheap out and don't use MDF like good speaker boxes are supposed to... so it's more sound engineering to make you think it sounds good, rather than it just sounding good in the first place.Comment

Did you sell speakers at one point in your life? Bose is the biggest piece of garbage. That wonderful sound your hearing is a fregin plastic tube with a speaker the size of a half $ junk pure junk.......the only reason they are expensive is cause they had to make tv comercials and other advertisement to sell this crap to sheeple and old people ......so to those that have it or want it .....yall Need your hearing checked!

"No highs, no lows, must be bose" is a dig at Bose speakers for sounding muddy and having little dynamic range. It is definitely not a praise of Bose, the company that supposedly spends millions of dollars a year in R&D, yet they haven't managed to come up with a replacement for their 901 series that's been the same since 1968 even though every other company has managed to make breakthroughs and surpass them.
Bose hasn't been competitive in the audio industry since the 70's, except for their extremely overpriced HTIB, garbage wave radio, and OEM car audio, all of which is mediocre. Their headphones suck too.
This is the company that has TV commercials with muted audio, and then "simulates" how superior their crappy wave radio is by increasing the volume so the ignorant masses who don't realize that it's still the speakers on their TV playing it back, go and buy overpriced and under-performing speakers.Comment
