I just want to throw this out there, about the 17" laptops. These are not really laptops so much as vaguely portable computers. They are huge and they weigh a ton.
I'm the COO for a small video game company so I'm use to filling the needs of artists. Especially ones who use Photoshop and such for a living. A 17" is not a notebook or true mobile solution. It's a desktop replacement that you can lug from place to place. You might want to consider a 15"
And what about a tablet. One of our artists just bought himself a pretty cool, variable pressure, multitouch screen laptop/tablet. He loves it.
If you are dead set on a laptop, check out Ibuypower.com They are idiots and you need to make sure what they send you is A. working and B. what you ordered. The up side is that they can get you the latest tech at the cheapest prices. I can't buy the parts even without OS for a PC for what I can buy the whole system from them. It's like ordering systems from the devil. They will try and screw you over but if you stay sharp and keep on them, you will get a great deal
