    or should I go new?

    Plasma:

    -Pro: Superior image quality (brand dependent) than the rest, Cheaper than LCD, No Ghosting or burn-in with modern sets.
    -Con: Heaviest of the bunch, More power consumption than others

    LCD:

    -Pro: Good image quality, Lighter than Plasma, super thin profile
    -Con: Ghosting effect, fading edges, can't match image quality like plasma

    LCD/LED:

    *Same as LCD except for the LED backlit to increase image sharpness on edges.

      flat panels are coming a long way in terms of picture quality, but are more liked due to their sleek profile. CRT still handles contrast, color and motion better than most flat panels. something to think about. However they are getting harder and harder to find in larger screen sizes and generally cap out at 1080i.

        Vizio, LG and Phillips all use the same screens.

              And also the largest CRT I've see was a 40".

                IMO the best TV's you can buy right now are Panasonic plasmas and Samsung LED LCDs.

                  So, new plasmas do or don't last as long as the others?

                      I believe 2-3 years ago Plasma HDTV technology was headed to the dinosaurs, Sony for one has abandoned plasma all together, but no one can deny the picture quality plasma has to offer and some held on and refined or say recharged the technology. The current Plasma HDTV out there are much better than plasmas from the past. Significant reduction in burn-in and better blacks and whites with deeper colors, not like some that has a washed out looking colors. Current LCD technology sits at a top at 240mhz refresh rate, to which is very costly to the consumer. Today's Plasma HDTVs are rated at 600mhz standard which give you a very low to zero "ghosting" like LCD does.

                              The Phillips would worry me a bit because they are exiting the TV business. That may not mean anything but it's why I didn't suggest one.

                                I would look into the following:

                                Plasma = Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Visio

                                LCD = Samsung, LG
