Ah, I understand. Thanks for everyone's help! Am now secured
Should I change my SSID? Thought I read a post saying not to make it obvious that it is your network.

Sheesh..Can anyone think of a reason why I can't get my mom's laptop to connect? Mine works, my sister's and hooked up my Xbox onto this but hers just doesn't work. I'm not familiar with XP but it really shouldn't be so difficult..It was mentioning that the settings on her laptop didn't go with my network.

I prefer a random name that does not identify me or my address. Just pick something like 'apples' 'router' or whatever you want.

Has she been able to hook it up before? Or is this a new-er-ish router? I know some older machines only allow WEP, and or Wireless B, instead of G. There could be a bunch of reasons.

If all else fails, switch to WEP, see if it works, if it only works with WEP, then you might have to stick with that.

Maybe it's time for you to buy mom a new laptop.

Ahh, I forgot how old her Toshiba is. Shouldn't be very! My sister borrows a netbook from my Aunt and that one has XP, forgot the brand of computer but it should be older than the Toshiba. Oh & my mistake, my mom has Vista not XP. I recognize XP but am unfamiliar with Vista(wasn't a fan). When we were unsecured, it hooked on just fine. Ugh, I really don't want to drop down in security just because her laptop sucks hahah. The router we have we received in 2005 or '06? I have no idea why it wouldn't work. Screw Vista haha

Man, I forgot how much JUNK is on their laptop hahah. Pre-installed junkkk everywhereee. Oh by the way, what kind of filtering should I be enabling? Mac or IP? It's defauled on IP. Wondering if that's what's keeping my mom off the internet here.

That is probably your problem. You really don't need filtering. You also don;t need any software to connect to the internet. If there is any software that came with the router, uninstall it immediately. Windows works just fine managing network connections.

Anyone wardriving with a gps can determine where your access point is.

Don't turn MAC filtering on unless you know what you're doing, otherwise you will not be able to connect. You should also make your WPA password at least 14 digits long, this will make it very hard for anyone to crack it since it takes forever to generate a rainbow table for passwords that long (used for cracking WPA). Make sure it's a strong password too (mixed cases, numbers & symbols).
