How do I setup a password for my wireless connection?

We got this router a yearsss ago but when the guy asked me what I wanted my password to be for it, I told him I'd add it later since I had no clue what to set it as. Now a days, I realize it's really a necessity to get this darn thing up so I don't have to worry about people not in this house using our internet or even worse, security issues.. Is this something I need to call Verizon about or is this a simple set up? The "WPA" and other things confuse the heck out of me!

It really depends on the router, they all have different screens and places to click. Here is a general answer.

    1) Log into your router. The IP address, or location, can vary widely, but many are 192.168.1.1. You will need the password too. If you can't remember it, try the factory default, which you can google with "default password" and make. IE. "default password linksys e1000"

    2) Once you are in, look for a tab generally called Wireless. There may be some sub tabs, but you will look for the encryption type or similar language while looking for WPA, WEP, etc. There maybe some addition stuff like WPA-Personal. These are like "languages" that encrypt the data going over the airwaves. If all you have is WEP, then it's time to buy a new router because many people can break a WEP password in under 10 minutes, and you won't even know you are being attacked or broken into. What you want is WPA and usually Personal is fine. From here, routers vary widely. Some may ask you to come up with a passphrase to generate a key, or you can put one in yourself. This is the area you talked about which will be your "password". After you enter in one, make a copy of it and keep it safe.

    3) Use what ever wireless device you want to connect with and after finding your routers wireless connection, it should ask for a password or passphrase and that is where you enter in what you did in step 2.

I understand this isn't very comprehensive, but since almost all routers have different specific ways to do this, it's difficult to be more specific.

Ah, thank you! I'll try this later today. If it doesn't work, I'll just have to contact Verizon.

Flip the router over and get all the info. Go to manufacturers website and download the instructions. All your setup info will be in their docs. This stuff is super easy, no need to call verizon.

Damn, almost got it. Typed in the IP address in the browser but can't seem to log in because of the username & password. Doing as the manual suggests but I think it has some legitimate username and password.

Make and model of router will help.

Either way, go to the login page and try a series of usernames/passwords such as:

            U:admin
            P:

            U:admin
            P:admin

            U:administrator
            P:

            U:administrator
            P:administrator

Those are some general passwords. If not, your manual or google can help you. Once you login, just go to wireless security settings, or something similar, and set up your network to WPA2 AES encryption, and you are good to go.

I did try a number of combinations =/
I went to their site and tried the "admin and leave the password blank" per the suggestion on the website and still nothing.

              I have the D-Link DI-624

                Password (none)

Have you set a password in the past, or got it used or possibly had someone else set a password?

You may have had an ******* who logged on to your unsecured network and set the password locking you out.

Either way, you will probably have to hard reset, each router has a different protocol for resetting, but it is possible on each machine. Refer to your manual.

I'm thinking the Verizon guy made a standard one? I have no clue. I'm the most knowledgeable computer person in this house (that doesn't say much). I could see someone else just logging onto mine and locking me out hehe. Should have just been patient and thought of a password for the guy years ago. I'm positive this router was brand new.

When I get this figured out, do we (3 computers here) have to type in the password everytime or does it make us the exception?

                    router

Go out and buy a new router.

hook it up ( comes with very easy to follow info)

Load the start up disc in your computer

it will ask you to set a pasword

                    Your done..

Copy and paste your Router info and password into word and print it out then tape it to your Router.

Here's the link for the manual for your router:

Go to the C-Prompt and type ipconfig -all then hit enter. Look at the IP address for your computer. If it begins with 192.168.0.xxx, exit out of the C-prompt window.

Open a browser window and instead of a web address, type 192.168.0.1 then hit enter. That should be the entry for the router. The default username is admin (lowercase) and the password by default is left blank. Hit enter. That should take you to the setup/configuration of the router. Go to the Wireless Security part and select WPA Personal 2, enter a suitable alpha-numeric password and save the setting. Now take a post-it note with the router admin and pw, plus the wireless name and pw, and stick that to the underside of the router so you don't lose it.

So you don't forget, you need to set a decent admin pw to access the setup menu, plus change the wireless broadcast (SSID) to NO! You should need to enter the name of the wireless network (and don't name it so it's easily identified belonging to your house, etc.)

When all else fails, READ THE MANUAL. AGAIN.

Dave, my car won't start, should I buy a battery or a new car?

Javi probably needs a hard reset.

                          Hard reset.

Also, please don't install the software that comes with the product, ever. Unless your computer cannot find the drivers by itself there is really no need to add to the crap already installed in your machine.

+1 on the hard reset and not installing the router manufacturer's software.

I'm just wondering what "drivers" would be installed on the computer though. The computer should be able to fully access and manage the router via either ethernet or wireless without anything more than a working web browser.

                              Admin password:
Read the manual in the link above. If the standard password doesn't work, someone else probably has changed it. If the Verizon guy changed it he should have written it for you somewhere. If one of your neighbors changed it, you'll have to do a factory reset, and then you'll have to reconnect to Verizon, which will probably entail calling them. Bottom line is you DO NOT want to leave it "admin" or whatever standard it is.

                              Wireless password:
On most routers when you select WEP you have to create a passcode, then it generates an alphanumeric string from that. That string is what you type in when you try to connect on your laptop. Not the passcode you made up.
