    I don't have it anymore, so I can't run any kind of test on it, but I used to have a first generation EeePC, the 701 model. 4GB SSD, Celeron M 900mHz. I did not have the fast/silent boot options set in the BIOS, so it still did the full memory check and everything. From the time of the button push to a fully responsive desktop in XP SP3 was 17 seconds.

      What matters more to you, speed or price? For $299 you can get the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB, it does up to 550MB/s read and up to 300MB/s write. This is supposed to be the best bang for you buck right now. If you do not mind having about 1/2 the read speed and nearly the same write speed you can get a previous generation Sandforce based drive (SF-1200 controller) for about $200. Unless you're putting the drive in a system that has an SATA-III controller the $200 drive will be just fine. It is also pretty hard to find the Vertex 3 drives in stock right now.

        Although it depends what you mean. For Hard Drives reliability is always #1 and performance #2.

        These achieve some amazing speeds assuming your hardware is SATA 6gbps (aka sata III although here is really no such thing as SATA III) But even on a sata II dell laptop it benches faster than my Intel X25MG2. Seem to be just as reliable too.

        Anyways thats what I would do, other than that, the deal becomes "whatever is on sale".

          Most SSDs benchmark faster than the Intel X-25 series. The Intel drives are not known for their speed. The Sandforce drives are the best ones on the market right now, unless you need reliability, in which case you should be looking at SLC based drives (expensive). The Corsair F120 (SF-1200 series controller) I'm using now is faster than the X-25 drives yet uses the same Intel MLC chips that are in the X-25 series. For some reason Intel doesn't let them rate the drive at 10,000 P/E cycles, however since these are the same chips that Intel uses in their drives and their drives are rated for 10,000 P/E cycles I expect to get the same out of this one, not to mention that the Sandforce controllers have better wear leveling. I'm pretty sure this is due to Intel's licensing agreement. SSDlife is showing that this drive is expected to last until April 7, 2021. That is over 10 years of life out of this drive, not bad considering most HDDs tend to die within 5 years.

            Intels used to be known for their speed But even using the same chips some brands seem to put out better products than others. look at the huge numbers of complaints with OCZ drives for example ( probably the most complains I hear are from ocz drives and complaints of their customer service).

            Reliability and how long the disk will last are two different things. Not all disks make it to their theoretical write limit, and even then it's just an estimate. Some mlc drives are still much more reliable than others. So to some extent I disagree that if you want reliability you need to look for SLC drives. In other words, just because someone purchases a non SLC drive, does not mean they do not, or should not, be concerned with reliability.

            Course theres more to it than just the hardware itself like you indicated about wear leveling.

            C300 has better real world reviews on newegg as well as faster reads. Even though reads are not proportionally faster than writes on the sandforce, they are for most people a more important number, that translates more significantly to real world performance for most users. For SSDs I tend to prefer faster reads by far, over faster sequential writes.

            The 4k speeds on the C300 are unreal.

            A better benchmark for SSD's is crystal disk mark.

            But to read this you need to understand what the numbers mean for real world use.

            As others have said getting to the desktop and having a usable desktop are different things (as well as one's opinion of usable). With a standard drive, even though the desktop is technically usable the drive may still be loading **** with a primitive spinning disk. I noticed the same thing when getting to the windows login screen. (both Regular and SSD get to this screen within a second of each other, but the spinning disk takes several times longer before it finishes loading everything it needs and remains idle).

              The only thing Newegg reviews are any good for is for letting you know if a product is going to fail on you, and even then you should only look at the verified purchasers reviews. That C300 you posted also has a slower max write speed (215MBps) than drives that have a Sandforce SF-1200 controller (Vertex 2, 275MBps), and the read/write speeds (355/215 MBps) cannot touch Sandforce SF-2200 based drives (Vertex 3, 550/500 MBps). The C300 was a good buy early last year when it was released, but it is a low end drive now. You also are not going to get anywhere near the C300's max read speed in any laptop that does not have a SATA-III controller (the vast majority of them).
