How does the Xoom compare to the iPad and Eee Slate? Tried to check one out today but they were all out. I'm still not sold on tablets yet though. The iPad seemed to be based solely around entertainment. AKA Facebook, mindless browsing, games and videos. I already waste enough of my life on my desktop at home doing that, last thing I want is it following me into public places.
I actually half way liked the Eee Slate. It was super fast and smooth. 4gb of RAM let you multitask without a hiccup. Made the iPad almost seem sluggish and hard to use. But in the end it just seems like a laptop missing it's keyboard to me. I really like the stylus and drawing on it though, would be great if you're a computer animator. /random tangent

Unfortunately, that app only allows for an ad-hoc mode tether, and an android device cannot connect to another android device with a wifi tether using ad-hoc mode. I need my Droid1 to broadcast on infrastructure mode (which I do not think is possible) or have my Xoom accept an ad-hoc tether.

Stuck with bluetooth tether, but that's better than nothing.

        UltraLNW:

Have you tried the newest version of Android Tether? The google code site isn't really updated, but they have added infrastructure mode to some devices. Grab the pre-11 apk and see if it works:

Also, CyanogenMod and other ROMs for the D1 will supply an Infrastructure connection, if you want to go that route.

The other option on the Xoom side is to wait for the Honeycomb code to hit AOSP, then reconfiguring wpa_supplicant and building it so it connects to ad-hoc will be a pretty simple change. I'm pretty sure someone will be on that minutes after AOSP is updated and distribute it on xda. I've already done this for my GalaxyTab (runs froyo) and it works great.

I'll give that app a try hopefully it works. My D1 is running CM7 RC 2, but I was only able to initiate an ad-hoc with the wifi tether app that was available earlier this week. I'm holding off on rooting my xoom for a month or so just to give the device a full shake down because I don't want any warranty issues to pop up.

Will let you know how the app you suggested works.

Tony - was unable to get the pre-11 apk to work either. Will have to wait till I root my xoom. Bluetooth is working at the moment, wifi would be better but I'm happy so far.

Looking forward to flash on the 18th!

I have gone back and forth on the whole tablet/ipad thing. I was picking up a Droid 2 yesterday and the guy was really wanting to show me the tablets. What do you use it for? They don't run standard apps, only ones from the marketplace. I know there are lots of apps, but what is your primary purpose?

I use mine a ton. Now I can get work done from the Pub, the car, the ****ter, anywhere!.
I always have coverage, no need to drag my macbook pro and wireless card around when I im not home.
I use it for NAV etc. all the things I would my Iphone also, but this is so much better with the bigger screen etc.

I use mine for everything I use my Droid for, but with the added benefit of speed and screen size. Think of it as an internet consuming device, not really an internet creating one.

I bought one with no contract (full price) and love it. We replaced the bedroom laptop with it because it can do everything we need. It is lighter, just as fast, and is a lot easier to pass back and forth than a laptop. I can see this android platform REALLY going places, if it is this good so early into the lifecycle of the OS 3.0.

Let me make a whole hearted recommendation to buy the desk dock. It is $50 and you will love it if you've been using your Xoom as much as I have. I'm not a Mobil device accessory guy, but this one is actually well worth the cash.

I bought one two weeks ago and gave my ipad to the wife. But now, i'm on the fence... i like the features but felt cheated for paying $799 for a product not ready for primetime.... apps keeps crashing... not sure what to do but i need to make a decision very very soon.

bumping this back up because I am wondering. Since some of you may have this product for several weeks now. And now that google and Motorola are ironing out their bugs, what do you think so far of your xoom?
