I traded because my family doesn't have the extra money to go out and buy a new computer. I'm in the process of getting on with the sheriff's department but the wait has been a lot longer to to the economy.
I'm lucky enough to have my old Dell right now though.

I tried that and it didn't do anything to the screen.

Ok, then that narrows it down to the inverter or video card.

My guess - Inverter.

If you plug the laptop into a monitor does it do the same thing or is it ok?

I plugged it into a mon and it came back on

Dang it, sorry to hear that. I don't suppose the guy who gave you the laptop is working with you? Is he a calgunner?

It's the inverter, those are usually pretty easy to swap out. You can get a new one on eBay for around $20. Instructions on replacing it should be online, just do a Google search for that model laptops service manual or a site where someone goes through the steps. The inverter should be under the plastic bezel that goes around the outside edge of the display.

No I didn't. He was showing me all the features that I didn't think to try it out.
