    Free Spyware protection

If you are running Windows, I hear good things about Microsoft's free download of Security Essentials.

        Ditto.

Lavasoft AdAware is also pretty good... it catches stuff that Spybot misses and vice versa.

Don't spend the money on the pay version (of either Adaware or AVG)... they're both bloatware.... not as bad as Norton... but still a very noticeable performance hit on a 2Ghz 32 bit machine.

Spybot and Malwarebytes can kill almost any malware (other than viruses and trojans) that I've ever gotten.

I've tried using spyware but I just got more frustrated w/ most apps being utterly useless. I just use avast and installed adblock on chrome/firefox. Just use common sense and don't open/run random things

GAWD...DON'T use AVG for virus protection. It has the potential to eventually lock up your OS and you'll have to re-install Windows. To answer your question about SPYWARE, I agree that SPYBOT is about the best for free spyware protection. PC Magazine recommends it and it is what I use. AVAST (free) is what I run for anti-virus. It has saved my computer many times. You also may want to consider CCLEANER (also free and recommended by PC Magazine) to run your recurring cleanups and keep your registry operating smoothly. Hope this helps. http://www.filehippo.com/download_sp...earch_destroy/

For virus protection, I use ESET NOD32. It's not free, but it's by far the best anti-virus I've used. It's very lightweight, isn't annoying, and works.

I'm using CCleaner, Spybot and AdAware once a week for touch ups.

I did have Comodo for my personal firewall, but started having a lot of problems with reloading it after my system slowed down for some reason.
Now I use Online Armor for my firewall, and it's kicking ***!

I also have Avira for my anti-virus scanner and monitor. So far, great response.

Using Firefox for my browser with Adblock+.

                        No nasties in years.

I have heard nothing but great things about Malwarebytes, so I will have to give that a whirl too!

I think one feature of Vista/7 that has been greatly overlooked is UAC.

Whenever you see UAC popup, double check what you're doing and/or what program is requesting for permissions. If you're on some pr0n site and UAC is requesting permission, chances are, it's spyware. If you're installing some legitimate software and UAC is requesting permission, it's probably legitimate.

I tend to disable real-time scanning of viruses on my computers (for speed considerations) and rely on UAC to red-flag any malware.
