        This thread is great! I downloaded the sharepod software and I have resurrected a couple of IPODs. I hate itunes and quit using ipods because of itunes.

          I use pod player. It's a tiny freeware program <500K and runs as a standalone executable so I just keep it on the ipod in an "applications" directory on the ipod iteself.

          Basically, it will read the ipod database from the ipod and make a simple "itunes" like player. I still use itunes as my primary ipod interface but the biggest benefit I've found with podplayer is that there is an "extract" option there as well that will rename the files into something that use usable to you. example: c:\targetdirectory\Artist\album\trk# - trackname.mp3
