Spammers found my work email after almost 3 years

Is there any way to get rid of them? We run thunderbird as our email client, and my spam filter catches most of it. I still hate the fact that they even reach my computer though.

Run your mail through gmail, then use TB to get gmail. Gmail's spam filters are very impressive.

gmail has the best free filters out there. did you piss anyone off recently?

its an old trick, you sign up someone you dont like for a ton of spam sites, gay porn, regular porn, and lottery sites.

then you can get really mean and sign people up for gay porn magazines to be delivered to their work, care of their managers name.

If you control your email addresses and they are easily changed, you can set up your email with a MANUAL key that senders must enter. This means discs with email address lists will become invalid shortly after they are created.

Each month, create a new email address, adding the month and year to the end of your name, and delete the previous month's address, with a 2-month overlap.

          January 2010: name0110@company.com
          February 2010: name0210@company.com
          March 2010: name0310@company.com (drop name0110@company.com)
          April 2010: name0410@company.com (drop name0210@company.com)

Each month, your email will need your name plus the month and year, and you can receive mail from someone who didn't get the word last month. Or you could choose a 3-month overlap, or 4 ... Respond to every legitimate email with a signature that spells out your email address policy. Eventually everyone will know how to send you an email by simply looking at a calendar and spammers won't bother to go through that trouble to add just one email address to their broadcast email lists.

The old email addresses won't be valid again for another 100 years!

Too much trouble? You could also use the A-L (A=January, B=February, etc. "namea@company.com") and the old email address would become valid again one year later.

Short of that, hunting down and killing spammers sounds good to me!

ha ha ha.. nice to see I am not the only one that does this

my filter lets through business related inquires that come via the form on my website - naturally of course - but now and then they turn out to be solicitations some jerk takes the time to fill out to try to sell me something... thats exactly what I do with those emails as my website clearly says the contact form is for clients or potential clients, not for job inquires or business solicitations.

              PC, no mac.

The rolling email is a great idea, but would be way to difficult for me to implement. There is no way i can get all of the people that email me information at random intervals to figure that out. (hint, i work with to many engineers)

Also, i have a gmail account and it is golden. Just my work account that is starting to get spam. Was hoping i could bite it in the *** before it gets out of hand like others at my work. they come in from a weekend and have a couple hundred emails.

I have had the same email address for about nine years now. It's been posted "in the clear" on Usenet thousands of times. If I were to count, I'll bet it receives dozens to hundreds of spams a day. I see maybe three.

SpamAssassin and procmail are wonderful things.

Contact whoever runs your companies mail servers, I'm sure they can write a new inbound spam filter.

Unless you're able to get a good anti-spam solution implemented (such as Barracuda...Postini...frontbridge), the Gmail solution is probably the best one.

I seriously doubt his employer is going to switch to Gmail because of a little spam, this is something that the IT department needs to filter out. Spam filters are fairly simple to update.

No switching involved. Have gmail pull via POP/IMAP/Exchange from the company server, and then the user pulls POP/IMAP through gmail.

Simple, elegant solution. Gmail's collective user base filters out more spam than any filter.
