We use an Epson Workforce 3640 for scanning & occasional copying or color printing. It accepts clone cartridges.
For most of our printing, HP Laserjet 5200dtn. B&W only, but it's fast, inexpensive, and duplexes 11x17

For everyday printing I?ve been using Epson EcoTank printers. They use bottles of ink for filling the ink ?tanks? on the printers. So far they have been wonderful printer/scanner/copy/fax machines with no software issues. And way cheaper than using cartridges.

For high quality printing I use another Epson model that is made to print ultra high quality and uses replaceable ink cartridges.

I came from exclusively using HP printers. But along the way HP decided to forget about making good equipment and shifted their focus on to extracting as much money as possible from customers.

I miss the old HP.

Related HP behavior- on my 3 yr old HP Envy desktop (med-high end i7) did the garden variety OS/BIOS update that appeared. Followed the prompts, all went well and time to reboot. The whole thing stopped working. An hour on the phone with HP 2nd level, then 3rd, "We got nothing further to help". Its now a freaking paperweight. No refund, no "send it in", no refurb exchange- nada.

Back to a nice Dell XPS I went.

HP invented the remote tank inkjet system. The large printers that I worked on when I was there were BIG tanks -- 1000 liters. HP now (again) sells consumer inkjet with tanks.

When I was there -- working about 200 feet from where inkjet was invented -- the problem of Chinese counterfeit cartridges and ink was very serious. There were no real HP inks or cartridges sold in Asia (all fakes) but there were millions of phone calls and emails from enraged customers. It was a big big mess. Even the Chinese refill kits were awful. I think they used cat piss, blue paint, pink sugary drinks, and charcoal water for the fake CMYK ink sets. Equipment destroyed.

It is obvious in hind-sight, but the crackdown on counterfeits left a big opening for others to step in.

Lots of good tech in this area. I invented a fair amount of it and got to work on some good projects. HP got hit hard by the woke virus, then the smart people left.

my H-P wouldn't work with off brand Inks I got off Amazon, but works with H-P brand Inks, and there are Youtubes for DIY refills.

Bad news is looking at Amazon reviews for other brands seems EVERYONE is playing all the same crappy games, from pushing Ink subscription, to disallowing off-brand replacements, to ONLY wanting to (sometimes) connect via router with no hard-line USB etc even possible or functioning.

I get the feeling its like washing machines. They are all made in the same factory, just diff brands slapped on. Unfortunately, printers don't all share parts or even Inks.

But I've had decent success with DIY refills in past.

Yup. HP used to have great printers about a decade ago. I had a black and white HP laser printer for years. It printed out all of my college homework and papers. Today they are just aholes. Even if you have a 3-in-1, they will disable the scanner if you install 3rd party ink or don't pay their monthly service fee.

I have a Brother laser printer. It works and works great with no subscription and works with any brand of compatible toner cartridges.

HP deserves to be punished for these anti-consumer practices. I will never buy an HP product ever again.

I'm a little late to the party, but I'll just say "plus 1."
Maybe 25-20 years ago until maybe 7-8 years ago I used HP. Quality gradually got worse, even using their ink. I sill have some new cartridges for some of the older printers, and wish they were good and someone could use them. I switched to Brother inkjet about the time I started switching to Brother CNC machines, and it was rock solid for a long time. I'll have to look at how many pages I've printed. I use it to print instructions, labels, and order sheets for the stuff I make. That can be a few hundred sheets every day. I added an Epson eco-tank and it's decent, but not as fast and solid as the Brother has been until a couple of months ago. I'm going to look at a Brother color laser. I think it makes sense to buy a more expensive, heavier duty, printer if it's going to be used much. The bigger cartridges are cheaper per page in my experience, and the printers last longer.
I'll try to remember to post up a list of the sealed cartridges I have in the contributors area in case someone can use them. Those thing are not cheap.

Anyone who uses ink printers from any manufacturer is, well, let's just say they're clueless. The purpose of ink printers is not so that you, the consumer, can actually print stuff. the purpose of ink printers is to sell naive people ink cartridges. If you actually want to print stuff buy a laser printer.

I don't have any problems with me Epson ecotank refilling with 3rd party ink as I need. No ink cartridges for me. And I use 2 of these daily to run my business.

Fortunately, we had bought our previous one from costco so when it stopped working we brought it back and got a refund/upgraded to a newer model. Now I do the test page thing and it's basically been a non-issue now.
