    Retro gaming

Recently I bought myself a Nintendo DS Lite. Never had one, never thought I?d ever get one. This thing is awesome. It plays DS and GBA games. Anyone else into old video games?

I have a RetroPi with a 256gig image full of ROMs. All the SNES, NES, Sega, arcade, DS, Gameboy, etc games on there. Something like 27000 games. Also an old X-Arcade set of sticks and some 8bitDo SNES pads. Works pretty good. Me and my kid have fun on it from time to time. I am using an old Raspberry Pi B+ I got back when they were still 30 bucks. Some day I'm going to build it into a proper arcade cabinet.

Wow that?s a lot of DS games. My DS Lite came with a flash cart with a bunch of games on it.

My favorite video game was Asteroids, until Tempest came out and made Asteroids suddenly seem dated. Then 1985 rolled around and video games just sort of lost their luster.
Asteroids and Tempest both used vector monitors that gave them a very crisp and fast appearance which was unusual for the time. Tempest also had a very cool metal control wheel with high quality bearings. With its color vector screen and the high end ergonomic controls, I feel Tempest marked the pinnacle of gaming.

I used to be a major gamer when I was younger, the first system I ever had was the PS2 with Gran Turismo 3, though I never had a DS Lite but kind of cool how you can play GBA games on it too. Over the years I sold or broke most of my consoles or just plain grew out out of gaming all together as I got older. I recently got back into it again, and bought a PS5 last Christmas, then I realized if I purchased a backwards compatible PS3 that I can play 5 generations worth of games in just 2 systems since the PS5 can play PS5 and PS4 games through backwards compatibility and the backwards compatible PS3 can play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games, kind of cool if you ask me .

Here is the current setup at the moment:

I just broke down my MAME cabinet (Mortal Kombat two player style). Still have the arcade controller deck part. It sat in the garage for 10+ years because I never mounted the computer and monitor in there. At first, you could use about any PC, but as MAME got bigger, it started supporting the newer stuff like Killer Instinct. My last favorite game on that was Qix.

My teletype and mainframe are long gone, so no more TREK and ZORK for me.

I used to be mildly into console play up until the Sega Genesis but I was primarily an arcade stud. That’s where all the chicks were. I got laid in 1990 and very shortly thereafter gave up all gaming.

Just the other day I was thinking how realistically and vividly I remember the sound of the centipede arcade game. it wasn't even a favorite of all time arcade games for me.
But it's weird how sometimes sounds, like the dropping of that centipede mushroom laying bug "Uuummmmmm!"
sometimes stick in your head for many many years because the game was around in the early eighties.

Here's a video if you don't remember that sound...

But on the thread topic of the older retro games I played. I was trying to temporarily escape a sad reality that I couldn't avoid and had to go through and I really leaned on the original call of duty World War II PC game to temporarily take me away mentally from thinking about the sadness. I think at that time it had been out the year or two at least.

No microphones to talk to other players so you had to type out anything and although I never played any other PC games or haven't played other video games since then I will say it definitely helped me get a little time away from the unavoidable and uncorrectable temporarily sad situation with its pure distraction.
So when people say video games are nothing but useless time wasters, I personally feel I disagree.
