it has to do with it. Its the helper chrome extension from mcafee something web advisor. Its part of their suite of bs software. I am certain he had clicked somewhere ok to have that installed thru another installation or web install. I know of malware bytes and hitman pro but sadly if the mcaffee is signed it will not be detected as malware. Again I might be wrong but would not venture in the rabbit hole before checking hte obvious!

OP stated that malwarebytes seems to have done the trick, but for the sake of discussion, I am going to disagree.

The popups that OP posted is the first clue. Notice the source ?bestmaxfield.com?? Do not go to that website but if you Google ?bestmaxfield? you?ll get some more info on that particular website, along with suggestions on how to remove the malware.

Still not convinced? Here is some more info directly from McAfee: https://www.mcafee.com/learn/how-to-stop-the-popups/

Agreed "Not McAffe" Just clickbait ads from a 3rd party. At least the "toenail fungus ones seem to have run they're coarse. Disagree that his computer is infected. Infected by what and for ??? On my phone it is "Dicks (the sporting goods store) an Harbor freight. But they are not really from them. The sender is shown at the top of the ad--do not open; just delete!!!

BTW "AdBlock" tracks every page you go to. So.....
