      Burn Java with fire. They taught us OOP with Java around year 2000. Setting up Java and libraries with eclipse or some other IDE was a pain in the azz


      Then c# came along with .NET and all you had to do was click debug or run and it was a game changer.

      But for OPs purposes, some top down functions / procedural app should work.

          Also have him take a course in databases. I can't tell you how many jr. programmers I see who have zero database knowledge, none. Drives me up the wall.
