online school for coding recommendation please

My son is an A student doing online school at ASU prep. It is a very difficult school. He is 16 and diagnosed high functioning autism but probably should be diagnosed aspergers. Kid is a knowledge sponge. Good at math and excellent memory.

He can self manage and loves school.

He wants to learn coding.

What schools would be a good fit for this? I know nothing about computer stuff as the last programming class I took was basic back in the 90s. I hated it.

What is he interested in? Best to grab an intro book in that area - not sure that it hugely matters which one - and start in.

Another option is to go grab a Raspberry Pi and one of the add on kits.

I'll look into that. I don't know anything about coding so had no idea how it works. I'm just trying to keep him occupied a little. He.craves new info.

If I can have him study apps that already exist and learn how they work it would help. I just don't know where to start with anything.

My other idea was getting him into accounting. He is a perfect example of the movie the accountant. Or tax prep.

Easy. Kahn Academy. He can go the distance at his own pace, and get all the support he needs. That is one of the best learning tools I've ever encountered. Plus, it's free. Then if, he decides to major in it, he'll already have had exposure to some of the fundamentals.

You can get an Ivy League education for free.
Check out the Sanford School of Engineering and computer science.
You should be able to program an I-phone in 20 weeks.

Having built a trading app at one point, I can tell you that it generally involves a quite-large in-memory database that is used to perform transforms on terabytes of data, and speculative simulations. The rest of the suite includes data gathering, from various feeds, various timed components that need to execute at specified intervals and with certain requirements for how fast they can complete their tasks, and modules that define the various simulations and triggers that you intend to run.

Some of that can be done in python, but python, like all scripting languages, has piss-poor memory management for large data sets. Even if the script can hold all the data in RAM, the execution speed becomes a bottleneck.

The large datasets are in databases like Hadoop, which is Java, and some of the faster components need to be coded in C because of the overhead of startup and memory transaction throughput.

A small batch-oriented stock trading knowledge-base (as opposed to an online trading system), is doable with just python and SQLite, but I wouldn’t count on it making a lot of good recommendations or getting you wealthy.

The toughest thing in pursuing programming is often getting an environment set up on a computer and maintained to do the programming. Figuring out resources that can help with that when trouble arises will come in handy. This step is often a stumbling block for new students to this arena.

What kind of coding? Apps and such, machine control, database, web, back end, etc ? My kid is getting into robotics programming and its mostly block based for now.

I can code but I hate it. To me its very tedious and boring. Programming machines and robots is a lot more interesting as its similar code but you get to see the fruits of your labor and sometimes knock people over with a robot which is hilarious. Skillshare, youtube, the sites already shared are good resources. If you have a Code Ninja facility near you I have heard good things about it.

I started with assembly language and worked up from there. Its a good foundation but I don't know if thats necessary these days.
