Are you looking to transfer all your installed programs or just some document and pictures?

Correction, make sure you have "2" backups of any data you care about,
on separate devices (drives) outside the computer, or that you can the power turn off of.

I remember one couple running a business was backing up their laptop to their laptop... Same drive, same partition, different folder, like it was Quicken... ... ..

If you are backing up to external hard drives, bitlocker them so they don't fall into enemy hands.

I kept an unencrypted backup HD at work just in case and when I quit the company and forgot the HD, the corporate lawyer and IT guy wanted to go through the hard drive file by file to make sure no corporate information was on it. When I showed up, I grabbed the HD, and said "what are you going to do now?". Encrypted USB hard drives all the way.

True, but I didn't go into detail.

My home computer is a Mac Pro with 128 MB of RAM. It has two mirrored drives internally that is backed up nightly with Carbon Copy Cloner. Should my main drive ever die, I simply open the side of the computer and put one of the mirrored drives in the main slot. Takes about 5 minutes.

I also have a pair of mirrored drives that I keep in a fire proof safe in my garage. Those get backed up periodically as well.
