If less than 1TB, then you could use a flash drive. If more, then you could use a external HDD. A NAS device would be ideal if you are doing this pretty frequently.

Remove drive from old laptop, attach to new laptop with USB to SATA cable. You can connect your old drive directly, and copy off the files you need.

Don't bother with the \progra*, or the \windows folders unless you know something special you need there... Specifically.

I used to boot to Knoppix on non-blocking Windows machines, and copy data to shares on a win-box, but it's been a while...

Throw them on a usb thumb drive. If that's all you need to transfer. Or just save them on a cloud so you don't lose them if you get a HD failure

Zip drives are very slow and the disks are not very large. If you have a lot of files and/or large files, it won't be very efficient.

If you have a router connect both machines to it using either wifi or cable. Using Windoze File Explorer you can easily copy files from one machine to the other.

I updated my laptop yesterday and had to transfer some files from my workstation to the laptop--worked a treat, and was very fast.

                          I paid $150 for a WD 4TB HD recently.
It might be a good investment so you can regularly backup your hard drive(s).
I have 3 portable hard drives over 1TB to back up all of my programs and data.
I have one that is a mirror that can be swapped out if/when the other fails.
The best system is a RAID, with multiple mirrored hard drives.

Make sure you have a back up.

Costco had a 6TB backup drive. I copied all my old laptop stuff to it and then transferred what I wanted to the new laptop. About every 6 mos I save everything to the BU drive
