The router is about 4 inches higher than the base of all the other electronic devices near it. The antenna tips a few inches higher than the tallest other device and a foot or so away and about an inch from the sheetrock ceiling.

I have never even considered moving it to a low corner, I always heard that it was best to get the router as high as possible. I'm not sure if the boss will allow moving it to a level she can see.

    I appreciate all the input.

While you do need the controller software, it doesn't have to be running all the time. You do need it to in order to get ongoing statistics. I just have mine running all the time on my main desktop, and it works fine.

I started with three of the older 2nd gen UFOs that were BGN only, and those worked great for about three years. I just upgraded one of them to the newer AC UFO, and it works really well. I can do the entire house (that used to take three) with just one unit. It's awesome.

Just upgrading to AC will help a ton for those devices that can support it.

What you are saying isn't wrong, but you have limited functionality without a controller.

Guest portal and other advance features require it to be running. If you have multiple APs for load sharing or zero handoff roaming then you end up with poor performance.

That said, if you only use a single AP... I see very little benefit of actually buying into the UniFi ecosystem.

I have been using open mesh for about a decade but then Datto bought them out and changed from pay a lot up front for hoisted controller to almost free AP’s and monthly charge for controller..... I was searching and searching and settled on the Dlink hardware controller system.

I don’t know that it’s as good as ubiquity, Aruba or even Luxul but it’s sufficient and competitively priced.
