    Dead end.

Looks like DaVinci Resolve 16 requires an OpenCL compatible GPU / drivers / etc.

I'm using an old dated Toshiba Portege R700 with an Intel i7 GPU, and this hardware apparently doesn't seem to support OpenCL? I went to the Intel site to install updated drivers, but when I try to install Intel's driver package, the software complains that the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

So, maybe this DaVinci Resolve package isn't for me. I'll hunt around some more based on suggestions here in this thread... OR maybe I just need a newer dedicated video editing machine.

I have always used sony vegas for quick jobs that didn't require the use of adobe products. I believe there is a free version out there but it has been years since I used it professionally. maybe give it a try.

Shucks. I almost was going to mention that resolve needs a robust machine to be usable. Getting a computer with an NVMe SSD and newer CPU will greatly improve your video editing life. I built a new computer two black fridays ago with an i7-8700k and have it overclclocked from 3.7 to 4.9ghz with a coolermaster cpu cooler and it never misses a beat. Great for the occasional game as well

I was amazed at how much easier it was to build computers these days, and how much cheaper hard drives were. My last computer was 8 years old and still worked fine for games and whatever I did, but my desire to get more into video editing and the advent of cheap 4k gopros made me decide it was time to upgrade.

Besides that, it's just so fast to use. Everything is almost instant.

Yup - I went with SSD for all my systems now, random notebook computers, work system, and my aging desktop computer as well. I'm not sure if I have a system that is fast enough to run DaVinci Resolve, though. Probably my work Macbook Pro can do it, but I'm trying to avoid doing too much personal editing on it.

As you say, storage is cheap - SATA drives, SATA arrays, quite plentiful and affordable nowadays. Content creators theoretically should never run out of storage, even with growing file sizes, because storage keeps getting more and more affordable, and presumably reasonably reliable.

I may think about upgrading a home system to be able to do video..
