Cheap/free, good, and basic video editing software

    Title basically states it.

I'm looking for a cheap or free video editing software for very basic editing. It can be for Windows or Linux.

Some of the functionality I'm looking for:
    • Simple photo adding - think adding a 1-2 second title page with a photo
    • Grafting two or more videos together - my source videos is split apart in 1 minute chunks. I want to combine a couple of them together
    • Chop end of video off - I want ability to chop the last 20-30 seconds off the video
    • Scale video down - I want to be able to go from 1080 down to 480

I don't need any special fade effects, zooming ,etc.

    What do you have?

I have used this, easy learning curve.

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder.

Microsoft photos. I forget if it came with Windows 10, was a free download or I had to pay a small amount for it.

            Handbrake is the Golden standard.

            Bandicut also suits your requirements.

i've not yet used handbrake other than compression. VSDC is one i'm trying out (still only compression since my 7 yr old laptop even iwth gpu can't handle hevc files from gopro).

Windows Movie Maker, free if you can find it online somewhere, I don't think it is on Microsoft downloads anymore.

I've only used Handbrake for video conversion.

I wasn't aware it could be used for combining video or adding stills.

I've been using wondershare for a few years with good results. It was an inexpensive (maybe 30 bucks? - can't recall), one-time buy. I most recently used it to create a family video with a title slide overlaying a static picture that segued to a video with a cnn-type banner crawl across the bottom.
Then I used it to crop a video of my son playing his part of a sextet and align the separately-recorded audio back to synch with the video. I exported it to a lower resolution so he could upload it for his friend to combine with the other instrumentalists. Worked great.
I just visited the wondershare website for the first time in a long time, and it looks like they've changed to a subscription model with different & improved software products, but I haven't poked around enough to be sure how it is now.

VSDC is good very good and like $20 a year. Davinci Resolve is also very good and it is free. I use Resolve most of the time now. I started out with VSDC but if you want to do more extensive editing Resolve is really nice. Lots of youtube stuff on using Resolve, once you get the hang of it you can work through lots of video quickly and produce professional videos.

Gopro has free software that i used many times when i was using a gopro for youtube. Its good but not great.

Mavic has a similar app, mavic fly, that can edit video on your phone.

                        Both are free.
