Yea, I have a gen 3 iPad as well and Apple no longer supports it. But it's in perfect condition and I use it daily. Sigh......

Can you jailbreak it and run the latest and greatest iOS after installing manually, like you can on an Android tablet?

When the LiPo batteries for my RC toys get puffy, I store them in a USGI .50 cal ammo can until I can take them to an e-recycle/disposal place. Make sure the seal is still air-tight. This is standard practice for RC hobbyists. Don't use the plastic cans from Harbor Freight and the like.
