Depends on what do you wish to do with your tablet. I travel a lot for work and I carry a Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet with me for entertainment, over the free Apple iPad my employer gave me. The Fire HD 10 is lighter and trust me, when you're running from one airport gate to another in your business outfit to catch the connecting fight, every oz counts.

Plus, the Fire HD 10 screen format is more suitable for watching movies.

BTW Amazon Fire tablets can be configured to install Google Play store, making it compatible with all the apps on Android, not just those from Amazon only. There are many tutorials online to show you how to do this.

Maybe some people buy a tablet to only do specific things, and don't need it to be an all in one device. Why exactly is Android not a "real" OS? I have two Android tablets and we have Android phones, none of our apps are "crippled". They work very well for their intended use. Try running a native ebook reader app on your Windows tablet, it's a craptastic experience. Disclaimer: I also have a Windows tablet, and like the Android tablets it's good at its intended use, but certainly not the best at everything.

I am completely *NOT* a "fanboi". I've worked IT for years, and was a computer tech/programmer/engineer/whatever for many years before that. I have the same agreement with Micro$oft as I do with Apple: They keep doing stupid stuff and I keep cussing at them!
If you're going to carry a tablet around, it might as well be one with as much capability as you can get - hence something that runs a real operating system, and can run real software. Android and IOS aren't it. If Apple would put OS X onto an iPad, then they too would "have something", but they don't so they don't. "Apps" are, for the most part, a crippled version of what's available on a "real" computer - much of that is, of course, caused by the crippled I/O "devices" are saddled with.

For airplane distance, I honestly feel the 10" might be too big.

We need more info about how you plan on using it and what hardware you want to run with it.

I'm not up to date on Android devices, but the USB port on the Surface is pretty nifty for thumb drives.

Galaxy s10+(phone) for pocket, have an iPad, as well as surface pro from last year.

Hands down surface pro.

No need for a laptop.

The IPad works great for surfing the net. But I hate not being able to d/l movies and pretty much anything I want onto it like an android tablet.

I use the tablet for entertainment purposes when I travel on planes with no "personal entertainment" capabilities.

Root the Toshiba and install a custom ROM on it if available and it will be like new. I just did this to my old Iconia tablet and it's nice and smooth again.

It all depends on what you want to use your new tablet for. A Fire tablet is a fine media playback device for very little money. I'm not worried about limited app choices in Amazon's app store because it's easy to sideload the Google Play Store. On the other hand I'm not a fan (a personal taste thing) of the too busy interface. I keep an 8" and 10" Fire as light and cheap mobile media playback devices whose loss to theft won't break my budget. They rock as giant indoor Kindle readers and for general reading, browsing, and watching videos.

For more serious use I have a 10" Samsung S2 but find myself taking a 13" notebook with me instead if I need to get some work done because I prefer physical keyboards for typing and real business-class applications when I need to get work done. With the exception of a few niche apps, Android tablet productivity apps just don't cut it for me.

Invest in a little reading time if that is worth trying. Else do it as a side project. I don't see much performance issue with basic use

What do you want to do with it and how much do you want to spend? I have 3 Fire tablets and they suck for pretty much everything. The screens are crap and they are slow and you are locked in (by default anyway) to Amazon.

I have a pile of 10" Samsung Tab A with the S pen at work. They are ok considering what we pay for them (200-250 bucks).

For Windows we have a bunch of Surface Pro 4's, and they are ok I guess. I never had issues with mine but some of the other guys here did so they switched out to HP Elite X2s. I have one of those for myself as well with the i7 (to run CAD applications like Revit) and I haven't had any issues with it. Its very expensive though, considering. Recently the company switched out to Dells as we get a better deal on them. I still have my Surface Pro 4 and my HP Elite. The surface I kept for myself since the company retired them. I don't use it that much. The Elite is just for work use.

Now, I hate most things Apple. My company gave me an iPhone 8 for work use (my personal phone is Android). I really don't like it....at all. But you know what I use most of the time at home? I got a new 2019 iPad with the pencil. I use the crap out of that thing for general browsing, music production stuff, sketches for my woodworking... all kinds of things. I can't really believe it myself but for $250/$350 w/pencil I don't know that there is anything better. My wife uses her iPad Air 2 regularly and has for a few years. Very rarely does she even bother to turn her laptop on anymore.

For work we use the Samsungs and a pile of iPads for shop production. Gone are the days where you unroll a big sheet of paper. Modern fabrication is all digital... they work off 3D models now instead of iso drawings. Both the Samsungs and iPads work equally well for this. They are mostly older iPad 4s.
